positive. DOHMH’s active laboratory surveillance system reported six positive laboratory results for

submitted for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) testing were positive.

During Week 43 (October 24-30), approximately 2% of all specimens tested for influenza
were positive. DOHMH’s active laboratory surveillance system reported 17 positive laboratory results for
influenza A, identified by rapid testing and six confirmed by viral isolation, as well as one positive
influenza B identified by rapid testing. Approximately 12% of specimens submitted for respiratory
syncytial virus (RSV) testing were positive. Limited subtyping of positive influenza A specimens in the
past three weeks has identified all as H3N2.

During Week 4 (January 23-29, 2011), approximately 15% of all specimens tested for influenza were positive. DOHMH?s active laboratory surveillance system reported 280 positive laboratory results for influenza A, identified by rapid testing and 204 confirmed by viral isolation or PCR. There were 38 specimens that were positive for influenza B or 12% of the total positive influenza results. About 14% of specimens submitted for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) testing were positive. Subtyping of positive influenza A specimens has identified most as H3N2, although we are now seeing an increase in specimens identified with H1N1.
Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet)

During Week 4 of 2011, approximately 2.7% of all sentinel provider visits were due to ILI. Starting in week 5 of the 2007-2008 season, these data reflect the inclusion of data derived from the syndromic surveillance system for emergency department visits. Our ILI rate is slightly above the Mid-Atlantic baseline of 2.4 and the national baseline of 2.5. Data have been received from 30 participating sentinel providers outside of the syndromic surveillance system, which includes data from 51 emergency departments in the City.

Influenza activity has decreased in New York City over the past few weeks, while
activity has increased in New York State and nation-wide. Influenza-like-illness visits reported to
ILINet are at 2.5% of all weekly visits, which is above the Mid-Atlantic baseline of 2.4 but the
same as the national baseline. Over one thousand patients have been hospitalized with
laboratory-confirmed influenza since the beginning of October. One pediatric influenza associated
death was reported during early December.

There was one new known outbreak of influenza at a long term care facility this week, involving one resident.
Since December 1, there have been approximately 41 known outbreaks of influenza A at long-term care
facilities, with over 263 residents affected, 61 (26%) known hospitalizations and five (2%) reported deaths.

All indicators in NYC are fairly normal for this time of the year. However, the rest of the state is experiencing a notable increase in %ILI and is well above baseline. If you go to the link for NYS provided by Missouriwatcher, you'll see the charts and if you click on the charts, it will take you to the data tables.

According to this chart (which I believe includes samples from both NYS and NYC), all three strains are nearly equally present. See the note at the bottom regarding co-infection of influenza B and pH1N1.

Although the %ILI in NYC does not indicate increased activity, the isolates chart suggests that there could still be another peak depending on the ratio of H3 to pH1 over the past several weeks. Flu B has increased and seems to be compatible with either H3 or pH1.
