My comments - There were 54 deaths in NYC and 31 deaths in NYS as of 8/31/09, for a total of 85. Since 9/1/09, there have been 11 deaths reported in NYC and 44 deaths reported in NYS for a total this season of 55. However, because NYC reports pediatric deaths to NYS, any NYC pediatric deaths will be reflected in both reports since the current reporting format was initiated this season. Based on media reports, there has been one pediatric death in NYC since 9/1/09, meaning that the total deaths for NY are 85 + 55 - 1 = 139 through Week 47. Deaths reported since last Friday will be reflected in the FT total as well.

Re: Updates for NYC and NYS - Week 52 - total 173

Week 52:
NYS reports 1 new adult death (50-64years)
NYC reports 1 new death (under 65) AND 1 death (65and over)

* Influenza activity in New York City has decreased since last month but remains higher than historic baseline for this time of year. Compared to May and June of 2009 current influenza activity is much less.
* Hospitalizations due to influenza A (including the novel H1N1 subtype) are still increased over baseline in NYC, but are stable or decreasing and are not as high as during May and June of 2009.
* Deaths due to influenza A (including the novel H1N1 subtype) continue to occur in NYC, but at a low level.
* H1N1 remains the predominant influenza subtype currently present in NYC. A small amount of influenza B is also present. Influenza A (H3N2) was detected recently in NYC. Laboratory surveillance shows continued high levels of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) circulating in NYC. The trend suggests that RSV circulation may be stabilizing or decreasing.

Re: Updates for NYC and NYS - Week 52 - total 175

Re: Updates for NYC and NYS - Week 52 - total 175

New York City updates on Friday and New York State updates on Thursday. The total number of deaths for NYS is 25 pediatric plus 67 adults, or 92. The total number of deaths in NYC since September 1st is 29. Since one of those was identified as a child and was reported to NYS, the total to be added to NYS's total is 28. In addition 54 NYC deaths were reported in the media prior to September 1st, for an overall total of 174 deaths.

One potential discrepancy is that I have 31 pediatric deaths in all of New York, leaving 6 pediatric deaths potentially counted twice, since NYS reports 25. However, I developed the pediatric death total by looking back at specific pediatric deaths reported in the media since April and am fairly confident that this number is accurate. The additional 6 could be cases that were never confirmed or for which tests are still pending.

Sorry if this is confusing, but New York has been difficult to track since NYC reports pediatric deaths to the state and still includes them as deaths in the <65 category.
