Publicly reported nursing home death data in New York may have undercounted the actual deaths related to those facilities by as much as 50 percent, the state's attorney general said.

Letitia James' office has been investigating nursing homes since last year and released its initial report Thursday.

"Among those findings were that a larger number of nursing home residents died from COVID-19 than the New York State Department of Health’s (DOH) published nursing home data reflected and may have been undercounted by as much as 50 percent," the office said in a statement....

Where people die is an important determinant of patient and caregiver experience. To assess changes in place of death, we analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Health Statistics database for natural deaths in the United States from 2003 through 2017. Cause of death was defined as the medical condition that had started the events that led directly to death, as recorded by the physician on the death certificate.

Andrew Cuomo’s bad ‘who cares’ answer on coronavirus nursing home data

Facing a brutal report from his own party’s state attorney general that said the state had undercounted nursing home deaths from the virus, Cuomo essentially argued that it’s neither here nor there.

“Look, whether a person died in a hospital or died in a nursing home, it’s — the people died,” Cuomo said. “People died. ‘I was in a hospital, I got transferred to a nursing home, and my father died.' ‘My father was in a nursing home, got transferred to a hospital, my father died.’ People died.”

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi set off a social media firestorm after saying Thursday the decision to withhold data was done because former President Donald Trump had been criticizing New York and other states with Democratic governors.

Democrats like state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, state Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou and longtime New York City Councilman Brad Lander are among those who've publicly blasted Cuomo and his administration.

Top state Republicans are already calling for either Cuomo's resignation or impeachment after the bombshell reporting, with state Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy saying, “prosecution and impeachment discussions must begin right away.”
