UFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A confirmed case of measles in a Suffolk County resident under five years old has been reported, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Suffolk County health officials, in coordination with the New York State Department of Health and Northwell Health, are investigating the case and are taking necessary proactive steps to prevent the spread of measles, the health department said.

According to an SCDH press release, there was potential exposure to measles for persons who visited the pediatric emergency department at Cohen Children's Medical Center in Queens on March 3 and 4, or visited an inpatient child on the Medicine 3 unit from March 3 to March 6. These times reflect the potential exposure period when the infected individual was in the identified areas, SCDH said.​..

New York State Department of Health Announces First Case of Measles in New York State Outside of New York City in 2025

​ALBANY, N.Y. (March 11, 2025) – The New York State Department of Health today announced the first case of measles in New York State outside of New York City in 2025, the third case in the state this year, amid a global and domestic increase in measles cases. The case was identified in a patient less than 5 years of age who resides in Suffolk County and was confirmed at the Department's Wadsworth Laboratory in Albany.

The State Health Department is closely monitoring this case—along with Suffolk County and New York City health officials — and have alerted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All New Yorkers are urged to protect themselves by making sure they're up to date on important, lifesaving immunizations.

"Our epidemiology and vaccine experts at the State Health Department and the State's Wadsworth Lab are working in collaboration with the health officials of Suffolk County, New York City and Northwell Health to monitor and investigate this case and any potential exposures," State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. "Measles can be very serious. It's much more than just a rash as complications can include pneumonia and inflammation of the brain, and often results in hospitalization. The most important thing people can do to protect themselves is to ensure they've been properly immunized against measles and immediately get a shot if they are not."

All partners are collaborating with Northwell Health, the parent company of Cohen Children's Medical Center in Queens where the patient is being treated, to investigate the case and are taking the necessary proactive steps to prevent the spread of measles.

It has been determined there was potential exposure to measles for the public and persons who visited the pediatric emergency department at Cohen Children's Medical Center on March 3 to March 4, 2025 or visited an inpatient child on the Medicine 3 unit from March 3 to March 6, 2025.

These times reflect the potential exposure period when the infected individual was in the identified areas. As this investigation is ongoing, potential other exposures are also being assessed.

Cohen Children's Medical Center is contacting patients who visited the emergency department and the pediatric floor at the time of the potential exposure and has identified patients who are at high risk who may require timely treatment. Anyone who feels they were exposed should consult with their doctor or pediatrician.

Measles is a highly contagious, serious respiratory disease that causes rash and fever. In some cases, measles can reduce the immune system's ability to fight other infections like pneumonia.

Serious complications of measles include hospitalization, pneumonia, brain swelling and death. Long-term serious complications can also include subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a brain disease resulting from an earlier measles infection that can lead to permanent brain damage.

Measles during pregnancy increases the risk of early labor, miscarriage, and low birth weight infants.

Measles is caused by a virus that is spread by coughing or sneezing into the air. Individuals can catch the disease by breathing in the virus or by touching a contaminated surface, then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth. Complications may include pneumonia, encephalitis, miscarriage, preterm birth, hospitalization, and death.

The incubation period for measles is up to 21 days. People who are exposed to measles should quarantine 21 days after exposure and those who test positive should isolate until four days after the rash appears.

ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT)- The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) is warning people who visited the emergency department on certain days, at Saratoga Hospital or Albany Medical Center, that there is a low risk of exposure to measles.

Despite the risk of infection being low, people who were at Saratoga Hospital’s Emergency Department on July 14 are encouraged to contact the hospital.

People who were potentially exposed at Albany Medical Center’s Emergency Department on July 16, were already notified and contacted directly.

NYSDOH said a Vermont resident who had recently traveled internationally, was at both hospital emergency departments to get treatment. It was later found out they had measles.​..

A case of measles has been confirmed in a dormitory associated with the Central Yeshiva Tomchei Tmimim Lubavitch – 770 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, prompting urgent health guidance from the ODA Crown Heights Health Center.

The patient, a young Yeshiva bochur from Israel currently studying in the “Kevutza” program at 770, was officially diagnosed earlier on Tuesday with the highly contagious virus.

“The risk of a large-scale outbreak is real,” stated the medical team at ODA in a public health text message to its patients at 1:19 PM on Tuesday.

The ODA didn’t disclose whether this bochur was a resident of the dormitories at 749 Eastern Parkway, 755 Eastern Parkway, 1414 President Street, 1214 Sterling Place, or another in the neighborhood. A medical source told COLlive it was the 755 dormitory.​..

A Rockland County resident was diagnosed with a case of measles, the county’s first case so far this year.
A release from county officials said that the person was “returning home from traveling a week prior, where a potential exposure had occurred.”
The person went to a health care facility on Aug. 20 and reported a rash on Friday, Aug. 22 – which was later confirmed to be measles.
Officials say it’s the first reported case since 2019 and that the person’s known contacts are being contacted and evaluated.​..

NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers may have been exposed to measles in the Lower East Side and SoHo, health officials disclosed.

The city's health department has said there are two cases linked to the exposure. It's still not clear how many people may have been exposed.

The health department is currently working to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed.

There have been 13 reported measles cases in New York City so far this year. Last year, the city had reported 14 measles cases in 2024, compared to just one case in 2023.​..

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — A second measles case has been reported this year in Rockland County.

Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Leahy announced on Friday that a second case of measles has been confirmed in a Rockland County resident. The new case is not connected to the previous measles case in August, which was the first case to be confirmed in the county after six years.

New York health leaders are urging families in Rockland County to get vaccinated for measles amid a recent spike in cases.

Rockland's health department said Friday that 20 new cases of the highly contagious disease have been confirmed since October in people who were unvaccinated, including many children under 5 years old.
