Outbreak of Coxsackie virus sidelines sports teams

Several football players are taking an unexpected and unwanted time out in Amsterdam. School officials say players on both the varsity and the junior varsity teams have confirmed cases of the Coxsackie virus, better known as hand, foot and mouth disease.

"I think parents are very concerned because of the outbreak and the fever and the blisters that are associated with hand, foot and mouth, but I'm here to tell you that it's not a deadly disease. it's not a deadly virus," said Sara Boerenko, Director of Public Health in Montgomery County.

Boerenko says the virus is commonly seen in younger children, but an outbreak at the middle or high school level is unusual...

Outbreak of Coxsackie virus is spreading at Upstate NY schools

At least five school districts in the Capital region are dealing with cases of the Coxsackie virus among students.

The virus also known as hand, foot and mouth disease has been reported in the Broadalbin-Perth, Cohoes, Amsterdam, Gloversville, and Fonda-Fultonville school districts. It is very contagious and causes flu-like symptoms including fever, headache and muscle aches.

On Wednesday, several students at Horseheads High School have been diagnosed with impetigo. This highly contagious skin infection is caused by strep or staph bacteria...

A very contagious viral infection is spreading in Upstate New York.

Known as the Coxsackie virus, it is often called the hand, foot and mouth disease. Symptoms are similar to the flu. They include fever, sore throat, lesions in the mouth, or skin rash on palms of the hands, soles of the feet, knees, elbows or buttocks.

Last month, most of the cases occurred at elementary or high schools. Now, there is an outbreak at Marist College in the Hudson Valley with 39 cases as of Wednesday, according to the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health.
