First case of COVID-19 diagnosed in the NWT, closes border to non-essential visitors

The Northwest Territories has its first positive case of the COVID-19 virus officials said Saturday.

Information about the person who tested positive was not divulged.

According to officials 299 tests have been conducted on people in the NWT with flu like symptoms and have travelled outside the territory in the last 14 days.

The territorial government also announced that it’s banning non-essential travel into the NWT with exceptions to police, health officials, flights crews and social service workers according to a release from the government...

The Northwest Territories government is closing the Liard Highway (Highway 7) to traffic in an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

The highway will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday from Kilometre 1 to Kilometre 5, the territorial government said in a news release on Monday.

Emergency and enforcement vehicles will still be allowed through.

The Liard Highway runs south to British Columbia and is one of two highways that connect the Northwest Territories to southern Canada. The other, Highway 1, remains open "for limited exceptions," and drivers are advised to use that road to enter or leave the territory...

N.W.T. extends public health emergency as its 2nd COVID-19 case confirmed in Inuvik

The Northwest Territories has extended its public health emergency as the territory confirms its second case of COVID-19 — the first case outside of the territory's capital.

The person is self-isolating in their home in Inuvik, N.W.T., along with members of their household. The information was issued in a news release and in a subsequent media briefing with territorial officials Wednesday afternoon.

The patient is doing well with mild symptoms and they likely won't need to be treated in a hospital, said Dr. Kami Kandola, the N.W.T.'s chief public health officer.

They travelled to British Columbia and flew into Inuvik on March 21, where they went into immediate self-isolation, as ordered, she said...

NWT confirms 2 more cases of COVID 19, new total 4

In a statement released around 9:30 PM Thursday April 2nd, the government of the NWT confirmed two new cases of COVID 19 in the territory. These brings the territory to a total of 4 cases.

As of April 2nd, 9 am the territory has tested 996 people, with a total of 4 confirmed positive for COVID 19 and 171 tests pending...
