Anthrax suspected in Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Seven bison carcasses found in the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary are being tested for possible anthrax infection.

Crews found the seven carcasses 30 kilometres northwest of Fort Province, marking the first time since 1993 that anthrax could be detected within the borders of the Sanctuary...

...The suspected cases in the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary follow an outbreak earlier this summer in the Slave River Lowlands, where 45 dead bison were found.

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Several anthrax outbreaks in the NWT are now deemed to be over.

However, that was not before anthrax was recently confirmed to have killed bison in Wood Buffalo National Park and the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary.

A more extensive outbreak of the disease is not expected in either the park or the sanctuary given the cooling temperatures at this time of year...
