LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A “superbug” that can cause severe infections in hospital patients is on the rise in Nevada healthcare facilities.

Information obtained by Nexstar’s KLAS from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services shows Candida auris, or C. auris, has been found at 42 facilities, with Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas experiencing the highest levels — nearly 500 total cases.

C. auris is a fungus that is easily spread. It is one of five superbugs identified in 2019 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as “urgent.” They are so-called “superbugs” because they are hard to kill with existing drugs.

In 2022, the CDC reported there were 2,377 clinical cases and 5,754 screening or colonization cases — where the fungus was present but had not caused an infection — in the U.S. In Nevada alone, there were 384 clinical cases reported, more than any other state (California was close behind at 359)...

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A “superbug” that causes serious infections continues to spread in Las Vegas hospitals and health care facilities, reaching its highest levels in January.

A total of 202 cases of the candida auris fungus — C. auris — were reported in Nevada in January, with 69 “clinical” cases involving infections. It’s the highest number of cases since the fungus was first found at a Nevada care facility in August of 2021. State health officials reported data from January is still incomplete, and more cases could be added...

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Infections from a fungus that is resistant to drug treatments are continuing at Nevada health care facilities, but they dropped in June to the lowest levels in about a year, according to data released by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Candida auris (C. auris) infections dropped to 44 in June. C. auris is listed as a “superbug” by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — one of seven “Antimicrobial Resistance Threats” on a fact sheet released in July.

Clinical cases (infections) involving C. auris have increased nationwide. Although current counts of cases nationwide are not available from the CDC, Nevada cases accounted for 16% of the total by the end of 2022. In March 2022, data showed Nevada had more C. auris infections reported than any other state...
