Health officials in Las Vegas have reported an unprecedented level of mosquito activity in Southern Nevada. Over 3,000 mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus. The Southern Nevada Health District revealed on Monday that as of June 6, 91 pools, containing 3,081 mosquitoes from 16 ZIP codes, have tested positive for the virus.

Additionally, two pools, with 46 mosquitoes from two ZIP codes, have tested positive for the virus causing St Louis encephalitis. According to the press release, the health district's Mosquito Surveillance Program has seen a surge in complaints about mosquito activity from residents.

The rise in reports is partly attributed to the increased presence of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes - aggressive daytime biters that prefer humans over birds. For the first time in Clark County, these mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile virus, reports Time.

Health officials noted that Southern Nevada has seen minimal West Nile virus activity over the past four years. Only two human cases were reported in 2023, while 43 confirmed human cases were reported back in 2019...

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Health officials are reporting three new cases of West Nile virus in Clark County, bringing the total number for the season to 10.

In a report dated July 8, the Southern Nevada Health District says it has received seven cases of a neuroinvasive form of the illness and three non-neuroinvasive cases.

That's up from the seven cases reported as of July 2.​..

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is reporting six new confirmed cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Clark County.

In a July 22 report, SNHD reported 14 confirmed cases. With these six new cases in a July 29 report, that number now reaches 20 confirmed West Nile Virus cases in 2024, so far.

Channel 13 anchor Joe Moeller has been following these cases since May, reporting just last week that two horses died from the virus in Las Vegas.

Although no human deaths have occurred in Clark County, one man has died from the virus this July in the San Francisco Bay Area — their first West Nile death in nearly 20 years.​..
