The number of cases of whooping cough continues to rise in Pond Inlet and two possible cases of the respiratory illness have now been found in Iqaluit.

Nunavut's health department says there are now 18 confirmed or probable cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, in Pond Inlet.

"A lot of them are children but we do have a few adults," said Dr. Kim Barker, the territory's chief medical officer...

The whooping cough outbreak in the Baffin region is slowing down, says Nunavut's chief medical officer.

"I would say that we've seen the number of new cases slow down in the last week," said Kim Barker, Nunavut's chief medical officer of health.

"We're certainly delighted that we haven't had any new cases in any other community, other than the three that we've been watching over the last couple of months."

There are 71 confirmed cases of whooping cough in the territory to date: 36 in Hall Beach, 29 in Iqaluit and six in Pond Inlet.

None of the 71 cases of whooping cough in Nunavut has resulted in a fatality, but in one case the patient was medevaced to a hospital for treatment...

The number of cases continue to rise and whooping cough has spread to yet another Nunavut community as the latest outbreak stretches past its fifth month.

Cases have now been confirmed in Igloolik, said Dr. Kim Barker, Nunavut's chief medical officer of health, Thursday.

There are now 98 confirmed cases across the territory, causing strain on Nunavut's health-care system.

"A number of the health centres have had to close to emergencies only because of the large numbers of people presenting to the health centre," Barker said...

Nunavut's whooping cough outbreak has now spread throughout the territory, according to a public health advisory issued today by the territory's Department of Health.

Earlier this month, cases were confirmed in Igloolik. Four other communities in the Baffin region ? Cape Dorset, Hall Beach, Pond Inlet and Iqaluit ? had previously reported confirmed cases.

The advisory says whooping cough is "a serious and active health concern."...

Whooping cough outbreak over, say Nunavut health officials
First cases appeared almost a year ago

Almost a year after the first appearance of the infection, Nunavut health officials say the territory?s whooping cough outbreak has finally ended.

Though the bacterial infection is diagnosed from time to time in Nunavut communities, health officials first flagged four cases of whooping cough in Pond Inlet in May 2016.

That number had grown to 13 cases by the end of the month before it began to spread to Iqaluit and other communities in the Qikiqtani region.

By the fall of 2016, Nunavut?s health department counted more than 100 cases of whooping cough, sometimes called pertussis, in 11 communities throughout the Qikiqtani and Kivalliq regions.

But on April 12, the Government of Nunavut?s health department declared the outbreak over...

Less than six months after the Government of Nunavut declared that the territory?s most recent outbreak of whooping cough is over, health officials say they?ve confirmed new cases of the respiratory infection in the Kivalliq community of Arviat, population about 3,000.

A spokesperson with Nunavut?s Department of Health could not specify the number of cases, but said it was low. The infection is currently confined to Arviat only...

Nunavut's Department of Health confirmed cases of whooping cough in Rankin Inlet on Tuesday, and in Arviat, last month.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a contagious disease of the throat and lungs.

Dr. Maureen Mayhew, Nunavut's acting chief medical officer, said the number of cases is above average in these communities for this time of year.

In a news release the department says anyone can get whooping cough, but the most severe cases are in children under the age of one.

Parents should keep their sick kids at home to avoid the spread of the illness, the department said. If anyone has a cough that lasts longer than a week, or any of the symptoms below, that person should visit a health centre...
