Introduction

Pakistan took the lead in closing its airspace to Taiwanese airlines, clearly adhering to the One China policy. This decision forced China Airlines and EVA Air to reroute to Russia, resulting in adjustments to at least a dozen flights on Asia-Europe routes, longer flight times, increased fuel costs, and significantly increased operational pressure.

According to a Bloomberg report cited by the Global Times on October 28, Pakistan has closed its airspace to airlines from Taiwan in support of the One China policy. The report noted that Pakistan is the first country globally to take such a measure, and Taiwanese airlines have begun adjusting their routes. Taiwanese media outlets, including the United Daily News, also reported on the news.

"The Pakistani aviation authorities adhere to the One China policy—only Chinese mainland airlines are allowed to fly over Pakistani airspace," Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told Bloomberg on the 28th. "We only allow Chinese mainland airlines to fly over Pakistani airspace."
The report, citing data from flight tracking website Flightradar24, stated that China Airlines and EVA Air of Taiwan ceased flying over Pakistan starting on the morning of October 25th. At least a dozen flights on their Asia-Europe routes from these two airlines have since transited Russian airspace. Neither airline nor the Civil Aeronautics Administration of Taiwan commented on the route changes, but the latter stated that it has never prohibited airlines from flying over Russia.
According to reports, since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Taiwanese airlines have intentionally avoided Russian airspace. The two airlines mentioned above have long relied heavily on transiting Pakistani airspace for their Asia-Europe routes, with 14 flights crossing Pakistani airspace on October 24th. After Pakistan closed its airspace, in addition to transiting through Russia, these two airlines also adjusted their routes, diverting flights to other parts of South Asia and the Middle East. These route adjustments may increase flight times and fuel costs, impacting the operations of Taiwanese airlines.
