Ocean-going birds infected with avian influenza are washing up dead on Nova Scotia shores and provincial officials are worried the highly contagious disease will now spread among local bird populations.

Thousands of northern gannets from a colony in the Magdalen Islands have died of the flu over the last couple of weeks and Quebec's Wildlife Ministry says hundreds of them are confirmed cases of H5N1 — known as avian flu.

Elizabeth Walsh, a biologist with Nova Scotia's Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said more than 300 dead or dying gannets have been found along the province's shoreline and there is concern the disease will spread locally...

Dr. Ted Leighton visited Bear Island near Digby, N.S., in mid-August, and knew something was amiss when he spotted a couple of seagulls acting oddly.

"They were behaving in a way that suggested some sort of neurological disorder," said Leighton, a retired veterinary pathologist and wildlife health researcher.

He noticed something else, too.

"I could see that there was an awful lot of scavenging going on. You could see a gull or two picking away at something dead on the beach, repeated again and again and again down the straight shoreline, as I could see it. So I thought there must be some substantial mortality going on."

Leighton, an internationally renowned scholar in wildlife disease, didn't have a chance to investigate further that day, but when he returned to Bear Island on Sept. 3, his suspicions were confirmed.

"There were skeletal remains all over the place," he said. "Often it was just wings and breastbone, no flesh at all, sometimes feathers."...

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
This event is the continuation of event #4191 for reporting wild birds with high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus. Outbreaks are reported by province/territory. The geographical marker is on the capital. Outbreaks of HPAI in domestic non-poultry are reported in Event #5250. For detailed and current information on high pathogenicity avian influenza cases in wild birds, please consult : http://www.cwhc-rcsf.ca/avian_influenza.php. Wildlife surveillance as well as the Canadian Avian Influenza Surveillance System (CanNAISS) activities for poultry are ongoing in Canada. According to Article 10.4.1.4. of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, Member Country should not impose bans on the international trade of poultry commodities in response to notification of infection with any Influenza A viruses in birds other than poultry.

A new report from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reveals that concerns remain about the spread of H5N5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in eastern Canada.

Since February 16, 2023, 50 wild birds have tested positive for H5N5 in the following provinces: Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Québec.
