Nova Scotia continues to report a high number of COVID-19 deaths in its latest weekly report released Thursday.

While COVID cases appear to be decreasing, data for the latest seven-day period shows the second highest number of COVID deaths reported since the pandemic began.

Health officials in Nova Scotia are reporting a drop in deaths, hospitalizations and case numbers in the province’s weekly COVID-19 update.

The province announced 18 deaths due to COVID-19 Thursday – four fewer than were reported last week.

The data released Thursday covers a seven-day period ending May 9.

"We're seeing virus activity continue to slow down in Nova Scotia and that's great news, but the number of hospitalizations and deaths remains high, and that's important to keep in mind even as we make our way out of the sixth wave," said Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health for Nova Scotia in a news release.

The province says the number of COVID-19 cases linked to long-term care and residential care facilities is down this week.

They also note the report shows the association between age and severe outcomes.

Since the start of the Omicron wave, which began on Dec. 8, 2021, Nova Scotia has reported 242 deaths related to COVID-19, with a median age of 81.

N.S. reports 24 COVID-19 deaths, daily average of 359 cases in weekly update
Number of deaths tied with previous record high death count from COVID-19
CBC News · Posted: May 19, 2022 2:35 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Nova Scotia is reporting 24 more COVID-19 deaths in its latest weekly update, a tie for the most deaths ever reported in the province in a single week.

The province also reported a daily average of 359 people testing positive from PCR tests — down slightly from last week.

Of the 24 deaths reported in the seven-day period ending May 16, 22 people (91.7 per cent) were 70 or older. The age range for the other two deaths is 50 to 59. The province noted nine of the people who died lived in long-term care facilities.

Nova Scotia's deputy chief medical officer of health expects those numbers to go down soon.

"It's not unusual for deaths to lag behind case numbers and even hospitalizations and ... l expect in the coming weeks the number of deaths will decrease," Dr. Shelley Deeks said in a teleconference Thursday.

The province said hospitalizations are nearly 11 times higher, and the risk of death is 114 times higher for people 70 and older compared to younger people...

N.S. reports 13 COVID-19 deaths, 226 daily average of cases in weekly update
Hospitalizations and new cases continue to decline, according to province
CBC News · Posted: May 26, 2022 3:02 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Nova Scotia is reporting 13 deaths caused by COVID-19 for the seven-day period ending May 23.

Nova Scotia health authority labs confirmed 1,584 new cases of the virus that week, an average of 226 new cases a day, according to a news release from the province Thursday.

There were 40 new hospitalizations as the result of the virus for that seven-day period.

The number of new cases continues to decline, along with the number of hospitalizations, the release said.

The province said hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are nearly 11 times higher, and the risk of death is 114 times higher, for people 70 and older compared to younger people.

A news release from the health authority on Thursday said 187 people currently in hospital have COVID-19.

33 people are in hospital due to COVID-19, including eight in intensive care.
171 people are in hospital for something else but have COVID-19.
83 people contracted COVID-19 after being admitted to hospital.

Hospitalization numbers for the IWK Health Centre are not included in the Nova Scotia Health figures. CBC News has requested the numbers from that facility and is awaiting a response.

Staffing numbers for the health authority were not included because of a technical issue, a release said...

Nova Scotia’s weekly COVID-19 report shows 1,563 new lab-confirmed cases, 41 hospitalizations and nine deaths during the seven-day period ending May 30.

All the deaths in this report were among people aged 70 or older.

The province noted in a news release Thursday that the number of new PCR-positive tests and hospitalizations is “similar” to last week.

Dr. Robert Strang, the province’s chief medical officer of health, said while virus activity has “slowed” over the past few weeks, it “hasn’t stopped.”...

N.S. reports 10 COVID-19 deaths, average of 278 daily cases in weekly update
Positive tests slightly higher this week, but hospitalizations and deaths are down
CBC News · Posted: Jun 16, 2022 3:33 PM AT | Last Updated: 22 minutes ago

Nova Scotia is reporting 10 COVID-19 deaths, 28 hospitalizations and a daily average of 278 lab-confirmed cases in its weekly figures.

The figures are from a seven-day period that ended June 13. The province said hospitalizations and deaths are down this week.

Starting this week, the number of lab-confirmed cases includes people who have COVID-19 for the second time or more. It said reinfections were not previously included in data reports because the number was small.

"Since the beginning of the Omicron wave, there have been 215 people who have tested positive 90 days or more after a previous positive PCR test result," Nova Scotia's Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shelley Deeks said in a news release.

"At this point, many Nova Scotians have tested positive for COVID-19, so the chances of reinfection become more probable; that is why we have shifted our reporting to include the number of reinfections in our weekly case count."

All of the COVID-19 deaths reported this week were people at least 70 years of age or older. Since March 2020, there have been 431 COVID-19 deaths in Nova Scotia...

N.S. hospitals no longer have designated COVID-19 units
Health authority removed designated units last month, moving to ‘care in place’ model
Brooklyn Currie · CBC News · Posted: Aug 10, 2022 3:56 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Nova Scotians who are admitted to the hospital while sick with COVID-19 are no longer being treated separately from patients who have not contracted the virus.

The province has been moving away from designated COVID-19 units for some time. The last ones closed in mid-July.

It's now using a "care in place" model, meaning all patients will be treated in whichever unit or facility of the hospital that meets their needs, regardless of COVID-19 status.

Dr. Shelly McNeil, senior medical director for COVID planning and implementation for Nova Scotia Health, called it the "gradual evolution" of dealing with COVID-19 in the health care system.

"We're seeing a shift to patients that tend to be complex medically, so they have lots of underlying medical problems, and COVID is tipping them over the edge, so to speak, with regard to other medical problems," McNeil said...

COVID-19 hospitalizations in N.S. higher in July than June
But deaths were lower in July than June, province reports
Anjuli Patil · CBC News · Posted: Aug 15, 2022 3:22 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Nova Scotia reported an increase in positive results for PCR tests and an increase in hospitalizations — but fewer deaths — in July compared to June in its monthly COVID-19 epidemiological summary.

A total of 8,650 positive PCR results, 225 hospitalizations and nine deaths were observed in July 2022. In June, the province reported 7,570 PCR positive results, 144 hospitalizations and 15 deaths from COVID-19.

The province said of the nine deaths reported in July, six were people who were 70 or older and three were living in long-term care facilities.

Age and a lack of vaccinations are still associated with severe COVID-19 outcomes, the province noted in its report.

It said Nova Scotians 70 and older have been hospitalized at nearly 14 times the rate of those 18 to 49. Also for this age group, the rate of death is 166 times higher compared to those under 50...
