Nova Scotia reported more than 1,200 new COVID-19 cases and five more deaths in its first weekly COVID-19 update.

Thursday’s release contained data from March 2 to 8, though daily releases were still being released until March 4.

In that period, the province reported 2,359 new PCR-confirmed cases of COVID-19, 1,077 of which were already reported in the final daily release. Since the last update, 1,282 new cases were confirmed over four days.

There were 50 new hospitalizations, including 17 that were already reported. A total of 50 hospitalizations remain active.

The province said the median age of those hospitalized is 70, and 30 per cent of current COVID-19 patients are partially vaccinated or unvaccinated.

During this period there was a total of 16 new COVID-19 deaths, 11 of which were already reported. From March 5 to 8, there were five new deaths.

Of those who died in the Omicron wave since Dec. 8, the median age was 79 and 23.8 per cent were partially vaccinated or unvaccinated.

In the weekly update, Nova Scotia said a downward trend continues in several key indications, such as hospitalizations and deaths.

But Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang said in the release “this week’s data report serves as an important reminder of just how much virus is still circulating out there.”...

N.S. reports average of 493 new COVID-19 cases per day in latest update
Province also reported 13 deaths in past week
CBC News · Posted: Mar 24, 2022 5:27 PM AT | Last Updated: 33 minutes ago

Nova Scotia is reporting 13 deaths and 42 people in hospital in the latest weekly COVID-19 update from the province.

The province also reported a total of 3,453 positive PCR tests from March 16 to 22, an average of 493 new COVID-19 cases per day. This total does not include positive rapid tests.

Nova Scotia lifted nearly all COVID-19 restrictions on Monday. Some restrictions remain, including mandatory seven-day isolation for anyone who tests positive and continued mask wearing at health care facilities, jails and courts. Students also must still wear masks in school for a few more weeks.

"The data in this week's report is not unexpected," Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health, said in a news release.

"We continue to see the impact of the first and second phases of our reopening reflected in the increase in PCR positive tests. This is always our earliest indicator. We will be closely monitoring the impact on hospitalizations in the weeks ahead."

According to CBC's tracking of COVID-19 deaths since the Omicron wave began, a total of 121 people have died of the virus since Dec. 8, 2021...

Nova Scotia’s weekly COVID-19 update shows a rise in cases at long-term and residential care facilities, as well as a continued climb in hospitalizations.

But, it reports the “lowest” risk of severe illness during the Omicron wave.

In its weekly update on Thursday, the province said there were 4,188 positive PCR tests performed at the lab and 53 new hospital admissions due to COVID-19 in the week ending March 30.

Ten deaths were reported during this period.

During that time, there were also 16 hospital discharges. That brings the the total number of people in hospital for COVID-19 to 51 people — with a median age of 68.

“We have more community transmission and people are getting infected with the virus, but the proportion of hospitalizations and deaths among those has remained low — the direct result of vaccination,” said Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health, in a news release...

Long a pandemic leader, Nova Scotia is now a COVID-19 hot spot
'There's really a lot of virus out there,' says infectious diseases expert Dr. Lisa Barrett
Richard Woodbury · CBC News · Posted: Apr 12, 2022 6:00 AM AT | Last Updated: 11 hours ago

Nova Scotia's past success at managing the COVID-19 pandemic is also one of the reasons why its daily case counts have never been worse, say two infectious disease experts.

The province has long been lauded for its handling of the pandemic, but daily case counts from the highly transmissible Omicron and BA.2 variants have been rising since late February. They have accelerated dramatically since the Nova Scotia government lifted most public health restrictions on March 21, including gathering limits and mandatory masking in most public places.

"The fact that it continues to go up and the percentage of people that are positive in that group means that there's really a lot of virus out there," said Dr. Lisa Barrett, an infectious diseases doctor and researcher at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Last Thursday, the most recent COVID-19 weekly reporting date, the province announced an average of almost 1,000 new daily cases, an all-time high since the pandemic began.

Barrett said the lack of mandatory masking rules in most settings combined with a large swath of the population without a previous COVID-19 infection has made Nova Scotia especially vulnerable.

"All those people who hadn't really been exposed before are getting infected, pretty much all at once, which was really what we wanted to avoid," said Barrett...

Nova Scotia is reporting a daily average of 1,152 COVID-19 cases, a new high since the pandemic began according to the latest weekly statistics released by the provincial health department.

Dr. Robert Strang, the province's chief medical officer of health, started the weekly briefing by urging Nova Scotians to be cautious this holiday weekend.

"It's critically important that people still remember to follow the COVID safety protocols and gather in a safe manner," he said.

In its weekly report, the province said for the six-day period ending April 11, there were 14 COVID-19 deaths in the province and 72 people admitted to hospital due to the virus...

N.S. acute care beds beyond capacity as COVID-19 continues to spread
Health authority says its acute care bed occupancy rate as of Tuesday was running at 106 per cent
Gareth Hampshire · CBC News · Posted: Apr 20, 2022 3:43 PM AT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Surging case numbers of COVID-19 are stretching Nova Scotia's hospitals to the point that there are now more patients than there are available acute care beds.

Nova Scotia's health authority confirmed its acute care bed occupancy rate as of Tuesday was running at 106 per cent. The numbers fluctuate daily, but there were 1,712 acute care beds and 1,815 patients provincewide.

A spokesperson said those 103 patients needing care would be in other parts of the hospital, like the emergency department, waiting for a bed to open up.

Acute care is defined by the health authority as in-patient medical, surgical, intensive care, obstetrics and pediatric nursing services.

Dr. Nicole Boutilier, vice-president of medicine for Nova Scotia Health, said staff have been busy creating new spaces for high-acuity patients in other hospital units...

Nova Scotia reports 24 COVID-19 deaths in past week, an all-time high
Daily case average stands at 777 new cases, down from 1,073 a week ago
Anam Khan · CBC News · Posted: Apr 28, 2022 5:44 PM AT | Last Updated: April 28

Nova Scotia is reporting a record number of COVID-19 deaths in its latest weekly report.

Twenty-four people died between April 19 and 25. Since Dec. 8, the beginning of the Omicron surge, 202 Nova Scotians have died from COVID-19. Their ages range from between 10 and 100 years old, with a median age of 80.

"The number of deaths isn't surprising. It's very extremely unfortunate but it's not surprising," said Dr. Shelley Deeks in a teleconference Thursday.

"As the numbers go up, we do know that a certain proportion will be severe, will be hospitalized and unfortunately will die."

There are 55 people currently in hospital due to COVID-19, including 10 in ICU.

However, the number of cases overall is decreasing. The daily case average stands at 777 new cases, down from 1,073 a week ago...
