No wonder they are having such a tough time and that this second wave is much larger. I was just reading the local paper from my hometown in Norway and the doctor in charge of the local heath unit has decided to vaccinate the population over 65 years old next week before making the vaccine available to children and teens...what a travesty.

My home town is Rygge and according to Moss Avis the kommuneoverlege has decided to vaccinate the over 65 year old starting the 10th of November even though she said they have a very small chance of becoming ill with H1N1 and make children and teens wait until the over 65's are done.........I feel sorry for my nieces and nephews living there being treated like this in sharp contrast to most places in the developed world.
My home town is Rygge and according to Moss Avis the kommuneoverlege has decided to vaccinate the over 65 year old starting the 10th of November even though she said they have a very small chance of becoming ill with H1N1 and make children and teens wait until the over 65's are done.........I feel sorry for my nieces and nephews living there being treated like this in sharp contrast to most places in the developed world.

I have read the article, and indeed Rygge makes a strange move. But don?t worry too much; the vaccines are coming in fast and hopefully in time. Also you can now get Tamiflu without seeing a doctor and for only 5o kroner.

Now in terms of your question about Norway, we have been in close contact with the
Norwegian authorities both to find out about the situation in the country, and to discuss
whether there is anything that WHO can offer to them. One of the interesting things which
the Norwegians are doing is to make antiviral drugs more easily available for a limited
period of time. The reasons that they are doing this is that the stress on the primary health
care system is quite high, and that in looking at the experience in some of the other
countries in making the antiviral more available it really can help facilitate both patients
getting to the antiviral drugs more quickly. Also, it can also reduce the pressure being seen
in the health care system.
So I think, overall, this is really an innovative and prudent move to try to make sure that the
health system remains as unstressed as possible. I think that one of the underlying concerns
is whether this should facilitate, or could facilitate the emergence of antiviral drug
resistance, but most of the cases of antiviral drug resistance that we are seeing, in the
sporadic cases, really have to do with prophylaxis and they do not have to do with treatment.
And so this is really to access antiviral drugs to people who are sick. It seems to be quite an
innovative move and would not seem to pose a particular danger to the emergence of
antiviral resistance.
Also you can now get Tamiflu without seeing a doctor and for only 5o kroner.

Actually I have several friends (3) there that are health care workers and they received their vaccines on October 27th, but probably because they work at the hospital. As far as the children I have seen first hand here in Toronto how fast a very healthy 13 year old can die, so how is it that we sit idle by and fail to protect the children that cannot speak up for themselves?

I agree, it's a very sad commentary on how complaisant we have become and how much we rely on the government to make the right decisions for us.
