Bird flu detected in wild birds in Rogaland

27.11.2020

The Norwegian Veterinary Institute has today, 27 November 2020, notified the Norwegian Food Safety Authority of the detection of highly pathogenic bird flu virus on a short-billed goose found in Sandnes municipality in Rogaland. This is the first time that highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) has been detected in Norway.

The short-billed goose ( Anser brachyrhynchus ) in Rogaland was infected with the HPAI subtype H5N8 virus. This virus is probably of the same type as the bird flu virus that has been detected in a number of birds in Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany as well as other European countries this autumn.
