Norway's nature reserves impose special measures due to bird flu

A travel ban to Norway's nature reserves has been introduced in response to the spread of bird flu, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority said on July 27.

This measure is taken to protect the colonies of vulnerable bird species in Finnmark. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has also restricted access to the Hornoy and Reinoya, Gotten and Eidwagen nature reserves to slow the spread of bird flu after the outbreak.
The areas were selected based on input from the Norwegian Environment Agency, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and the state administration in Tromso and Finnmark.

So the ban means that people are not allowed to move on land in these areas. The measure is aimed at preventing the infection through the clothes and shoes of people arriving on the territory. At the same time, actions necessary for life, health and environmental protection are allowed. The ban also does not apply to personnel who are involved in publicly organized work on the collection of dead birds, observation, research in reserves.

“These nature reserves have colonies of serpentine and other vulnerable species. Birds mostly get infected from each other, but the travel ban at least prevents people from spreading the virus through shoes, clothes and equipment in these reserves ,” says Director General of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority Ingunn Midttun Godal.

The agency is currently evaluating the need to impose travel bans in other areas. There are a limited number of measures that can be taken to stop the infestation of wild birds.
