AFFECTED POPULATION DESCRIPTION
This outbreak has evolved and now includes bird cliffs with colonies of nesting Black-legged kittiwakes in Vadsø and Vardø municipalities. 12000 dead birds have been collected by the local municipality during the last 14 days. They are mainly sent to rendering according to the regulation but this whole county is defined as a remote area. A ban on unnecessary movements on land has been imposed on Hornøya and two other nature reserves in the area.

Norwegian Kittiwakes ravaged by bird flu

Kittiwake has been severely affected by an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI; bird flu) in northern Norway in recent weeks.

A staggering 11,000 dead Kittiwakes have already been removed from colonies around the Vadsø municipality in Finnmark, which may amount to more than half of the local population.

EPIDEMIOLOGY

SOURCE OF EVENT OR ORIGIN OF INFECTION
  • Unknown or inconclusive
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
According to the Norwegian Veterinary Laboratory, the test was only weakly positive for HPAI H5, and because of the small amount of virus, the result from subtyping for neuraminidase would be uncertain. The laboratory will likely not follow up with more tests, the sample will end up as H5. Since Norway has not reported other events without a NA type, Norway considers this strain as a new strain in the country.
