Two babies have died at the Royal Hospital after an outbreak of an infection, Belfast Health Trust said.

Pseudomonas can be particularly harmful to infants who are already ill, a spokesman for the organisation added.

Admission to the neonatal unit is being restricted.

The Royal representative said: ?Sadly two ill babies have died whose deaths may be linked to this outbreak. We are supporting these families at this very difficult time.

Third baby dies after bug outbreak

A third baby has died after an outbreak of a deadly infection in a hospital.

The latest death was confirmed as staff at Belfast's Royal Hospital launched an investigation to trace the killer bug at Northern Ireland's biggest maternity unit, which will undergo a deep clean.

Northern Ireland health minister Edwin Poots said expectant mothers are likely to be transferred to other hospitals in the Irish Republic and Britain.

The deaths are believed to be linked to the pseudomonas infection, which can cause severe breathing and other problems.

Deep clean of Belfast hospital's neo-natal unit complete

Staff at Belfast's Royal Jubilee Maternity hospital have finished a deep clean of the neo-natal ward.

It follows the death of three babies from Pseudonomas bacterial infection.

Parents of infants at the unit are facing an anxious wait for test results to see if their children have contracted the virus.

A trust spokesperson said there was "a need to be entirely sure about the cause of the outbreak" before the unit was re-opened.

The trust said investigations were continuing and was ''hopeful'' that the majority of the parents would be told the results on Monday.

On Saturday night, Health Minister Edwin Poots said there had been no new cases and there was no further need to transfer mothers outside Northern Ireland.

He said testing had shown six confirmed cases.

Three babies have died from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and another one recovered after treatment but later died of unrelated causes. Two other babies who contracted the bug have recovered.

Western Trust had three baby infection cases last year


The Western Health Trust dealt with three cases of the pseudomonas infection before last Christmas, the BBC understands.

One baby being treated in Altnagelvin's neo-natal unit died, while another made a full recovery. A third was transferred to the Royal Victoria hospital in Belfast.

All three infants had a different strain of the infection that is currently being investigated at the Royal's neo-natal unit.

The neo-natal unit at the Royal under went a deep clean

Sink taps were the source of an infection which killed three babies at a Belfast hospital, the Northern Ireland health minister has confirmed.

Edwin Poots told the NI Assembly that the Pseudomonas bacteria had been traced to taps at a neo-natal unit in the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital.

The unit was deep cleaned at the weekend after six babies were found to be infected.

A seventh case which emerged on Tuesday has now been confirmed as Pseudomonas.

That child remains very ill.

Sterile water is now to be used for nappy changing in the neo-natal unit.

Pseudomonas has claimed the lives of three babies at the Royal Jubilee maternity hospital in Belfast and one in Derry's Altnagelvin hospital.
Another Northern Ireland hospital has reported an outbreak of the bacteria that has led to the death of four babies.

The pseudomonas bacteria has been found in the Ulster hospital on the eastern outskirts of Belfast, the Department of Health confirmed on Sunday.

It said the bug was detected in water outlets in the neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital.

The DoH said none of the babies in the unit has tested positive for the infection but screening is ongoing.

THE fatal bacteria linked to the deaths of four newborns at the Royal Victoria Hosptial has spread to Craigavon Hosptial’s neo-natal unit.

Laboratory tests have confirmed that the deadly bug has been found on the skin of two vulnerable babies in the Craigavon unit, and another at Daisy Hill Hospital.

While it is not affecting their health, they are being closely monitored to make sure it does not enter their blood stream.

Traces of a deadly infection which killed four babies in hospitals in Northern Ireland have been found in three more neonatal units.

Health officials said the pseudomonas bacteria has been detected in water outlets at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, Co Down, Craigavon Area Hospital in Co Armagh and the Erne Hospital in Co Fermanagh. The Public Health Agency said no babies in these three hospitals had been infected.

Separate outbreaks claimed the lives of one newborn at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry in December and three at the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in Belfast last month.

Poots reveals 26 Pseudomonas deaths in four years


Twenty-six people have died from Pseudomonas in Northern Ireland over the past four years.

This does not include the recent deaths of four babies at neo-natal units.

The Health Minister, Edwin Poots, revealed the figure on Wednesday as he briefed the assembly's health committee on the investigation.

Mr Poots said it should be considered within the context of the number of confirmed cases each year, approximately 85.
