A severe cold wave in north India today left people shivering and claimed eight lives in Allahabad even as Leh town in Jammu and Kashmir froze at minus 20 degrees Celsius.

The mercury dipped below three degrees Celsius, the first time in seven years in Allahabad, leaving eight people dead due to cold in the district with the trans-Ganga region accounting for five deaths.

Railway traffic was also hit due to fog with certain trains like the Prayagraj Express, Sangam Express and Reeva Express running three to four hours behind schedule, railway sources said.

Allahabad, Jan 9 (PTI) A four-month-old ailing girl, on way from Patna to New Delhi for treatment, died on way to a hospital here after her condition worsened on board the train which was running late due to inclement weather.

The condition of Reet, travelling along with her family in Patna-Delhi Rajdhani Express, deteriorated and she had to be rushed to a hospital here, Railway officials said.

So far 81 people have died in the State due to the cold

New Delhi: Thirteen more people perished in Uttar Pradesh as the intense cold wave sweeping north India maintained its grip over the region, with the national Capital witnessing the coldest day of the season. So far 81 people have died in the State due to the cold.

While five people died in the Maharajganj district, four deaths were reported in Barabanki. One person each died in Deoria, Firozabad, Hardoi and Ballia due to the cold since Saturday, official sources said.
