15 more die of cold in UP

Lucknow, Jan 9 (PTI) Cold wave claimed 15 more lives overnight in different parts of Uttar Pradesh as winter chill intensified further, taking the death toll in the state this season to 205.

While four persons each died in cold related incidents in Jaunpur and Badaun, two deaths each were reported from Allahabad and Balrampur, officials said, adding that Amethi, Basti and Deoria reported one death each.

Churk, which recorded a low of 4.6 degree Celsius, was the coldest place in the state, followed by Fursatganj, where temperature hovered around 5 deg C, Met officials said.

Meerut and Sultanpur registered a minimum of 5.5 and 7.6 degree C respectively.

Elsewhere, the state capital Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 12.3 degree C, while Kanpur recorded a high of 14 degree C, both the places nine notches below normal.

In Agra, the maximum temperature hovered around 16.

Intense cold claims 29 lives

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) The cold wave in north India claimed 29 more lives, taking the toll to 258 this winter, as icy winds swept across the region and dense fog affected movement of air, rail and road traffic today.

Twenty-seven people died overnight in Uttar Pradesh while two persons died in Jalandhar in Punjab, official sources said.

In Uttar Pradesh, the cold claimed six lives in Banda, as four deaths were reported from Jaunpur, three deaths each from Maharajganj and Mahoba, two each from Siddharth Nagar, Mirzapur, Faizabad and Muzaffarnagar and one each from Bareilly, Farukkhabad and Badaun, they said.

Meanwhile, after a marginal rise yesterday, temperatures dipped again at many places in the northern region with the low settling at 1.8 degree celsius in Amritsar and minus 1.2 degrees in Mount Abu.

Lucknow, Jan 12 (PTI) Intense cold claimed 38 more lives in Uttar Pradesh hours as the cold wave continued in the state, official sources said here today.

While five persons each died overnight in cold related incidents in Barabanki and Sitapur, four deaths were reported from Gonda and Varanasi, three from Etah and Orai, two each from Lucknow, Muzaffarnagar, Kheri, Kushinagar, Ballia and Chandauli and one each from Azamgarh and Basti, they said.

With 38 more perishing due to the cold, the death toll this winter has reached 300 in the state, sources said.

Kanpur, which recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7 degree celsius, four notches below normal, was the coldest place in the state, followed by Varnasi, where mercury level dipped to four degrees, four marks below normal, Met office said.

While the maximum day temperature in Agra was 13.

New Delhi: Cold conditions worsened in parts of North India where Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh reeled under sub-zero temperatures on Tuesday while icy winds swept across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, even as 326 people died of cold so far this season.

Two fresh deaths were reported from Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh, which alone has accounted for 264 casualties so far this winter.

The national capital experienced intense cold because of chilly winds though the minimum temperature rose marginally to settle at 7 degree Celsius.


Cold conditions worsened in Jammu and Ladakh regions with fall in mercury level, though there was some improvement in night temperatures in Kashmir Valley.

The night temperature in Jammu slipped to 2.7 deg C, nearly six degrees below normal, from 4 deg C yesterday.

Banihal was the coldest place in the region at minus 1.6 deg C followed by Bhaderwah at 1.6 deg C.

The frontier region of Ladakh reeled under cold wave as night temperature dipped to minus 22 deg C in Leh as against minus 20 deg C yesterday while Kargil's night temperature slipped to minus 16.4 deg C.

However, there was improvement in night temperature in Kashmir Valley with Srinagar recording minus 3.6 deg C, 1.6 degrees below normal. The summer capital had recorded minus 4.2 deg C yesterday.

Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir was the coldest place in the region with a minimum of minus 5.5 deg C as against minus 6.6 deg C yesterday.

Higher reaches in Himachal Pradesh continued to reel under sub-zero temperatures though there was some improvement in the night temperatures in the hill state.

Keylong, the district headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti, was the coldest place with a minimum of minus 11.7 deg C.

Shimla, the Queen of Hills, recorded a night temperature of 6.3 deg C, almost same as yesterday.

Dense fog affected normal life in several districts of Uttarakhand, where cold conditions intensified.

Amritsar was the coldest place in Punjab with a low of 2.2 deg C, two notches below normal, while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded minimum temperatures of 6.2 deg C and 5.8 deg C. Chandigarh had a low of 5.8 deg C.

In Haryana, Rohtak and Karnal recorded a minimum of 4.8 deg C and 6 deg C respectively, one degree below normal, while Ambala recorded a low of 4.7 deg C.

People in Rajasthan got some respite from biting cold as mercury rose by a few notches.

Bikaner was the coldest place in the state with a low of 2.1 deg C followed by Ganganagar at 3.2 deg C. Jaipur had a minimum of 5.9 deg C and Jaiaslmer 6.2 deg C.

Ten people died overnight in cold related incidents in Jaunpur, while two deaths each were reported from Kanpur, Mahoba, Agra, Bareilly and Deoria, one each from Fatehpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Azamgarh, Haathras and Maharajganj, taking the death toll to 325 in the state this winter, they said.

Shahjahanpur, which recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7 degree celsius, was the coldest place in the state, followed by Gorakhpur, where mercury settled at 4.8 degrees, four marks below normal, the Met office said.

New Delhi - At least 326 people have died as a cold wave intensified its grip over northern India following rains in the region, media reports said Wednesday. The northern state of Uttar Pradesh, which has been the worst hit, saw 38 fresh deaths since Monday night while the Himalayan states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh reeled under sub-zero temperatures, the NDTV news channel reported.

Uttar Pradesh alone has accounted for 300 deaths during the cold snap. Most victims were either among elderly or poor, having inadequate shelter and warm clothing, state officials said.

Meanwhile rains over northern parts of India, including the national capital New Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh since late Tuesday resulted in temperatures plummeting further.

The lowest temperature on the plains was reported from Amritsar, which recorded 2.2 degrees Celsius. In New Delhi, the lowest temperature was recorded at 8.1 degrees Celsius while the maximum stood at 15 degrees on Tuesday.

The regional weather bureau forecast that the cold weather conditions were likely to persist with icy winds blowing from the Himalayas in the north. Rains and thunderstorms are also predicted across the region.

Winters in India are brief, beginning in mid-December and ending by February.

Rains in parts of north India today compounded the misery of the people reeling under cold wave which claimed 354 lives this winter.

Uttar Pradesh, where the mercury dipped following rains, accounted for 25 fresh deaths, official sources said, adding the state alone accounted for 325 casualties.

In Ludhiana in Punjab, three persons died due to cold.

Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh experienced light overnight rains even as minimum temperature rose by two to three notches above normal.

Chandigarh recorded a low of 6.7 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. The UT recorded a rainfall of 2.5 mm, the Met office said.

In Punjab, Amritsar and Ludhiana recorded a low of 4.2 deg C and 6.3 deg C respectively. Patiala had a low of 6.8 deg C and rainfall of 3.7 mm.

Ambala and Karnal in Haryana had a low of 4.9 deg C and 4.6 deg C respectively, two notches below normal.

Rainfall intensified cold conditions in Rajasthan where Bikaner was the coldest place with a low of 4.7 deg C. Churu settled at a low of 5.1 deg C and Jaisalmer 5.3 deg C.

Bharatpur recorded 17 mm rainfall and Jaipur 4.5 mm.

Early morning fog was experienced in Pilani, Churu, Jaisalmer, Kota, Bikaner, Ganganagar and Jaipur.

People in Jammu and Kashmir got some respite from cold conditions as mercury rose marginally in the state.

Jammu recorded a low of 5.6 deg C, three degrees below normal, up from 2.7 deg C yesterday. Katra had a low of 4.6 deg C.

Intense cold prevails in north India, 366 deaths so far

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) Intense cold conditions prevailed in most parts of north India today where the toll so far this winter climbed to 366 even as dense fog returned to the national capital disrupting flights and train services.

The 12 fresh casualties were reported from Uttar Pradesh which alone accounts for 337 cold related deaths. Authorities have ordered closure of all schools in the state up to class eight till January 17.

Chilly winds swept across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with the Met office forecasting fall in minimum temperatures in the region in the next few days.

Narnaul was the coldest place in Haryana with a minimum of 2 degrees Celsius, while in Ambala it was 3.2 deg C. Cold conditions prevailed in Chandigarh as the minimum settled at 5 deg C, while in Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low at 3.2 deg C.

Cold conditions intensify in UP, claim 23 more lives

Lucknow, Jan 16 (PTI) With the mercury dipping further in Uttar Pradesh, at least 23 persons were killed in cold and fog related incidents in the state since last evening taking the death toll to 379 this winter, official sources said here today.

Four persons each were killed in Fatehpur and Jaunpur districts, three deaths were reported from Siddharth Nagar and one each from Maharajganj, Aligarh, Hamirpur, Amethi and Sultanpur, they said.

Dense fog resulted in road accidents at a number of places in the state, police sources said.

While five persons were killed in Sitapur district when a bus rammed into a tree due to dense fog, two more were killed in Lucknow after a jeep slammed into a tree due to poor visbility this morning, they said.

While three persons each died overnight in Bhadoi, Sant Kabir Nagar and Ghazipur, two deaths each were reported from Gonda, Gorakhpur and Kanpur and one each from Maharajganj and Ballia, taking the toll to 396 this winter in the state, they said.

Lucknow, Jan 23 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh continued to reel under severe cold conditions which claimed 12 more lives since last night, taking the toll this winter to 492.

Five people died in cold-related incidents in Bahraich, three in Barabanki and two in Hardoi, officials said, adding one each death was reported from Sitapur and Ambedkarnagar.

Bareilly was the coldest in the state, recording a low of four degree Celsius.

Elsewhere, Lucknow recorded a minimum temperature of 5 C, Kanpur 6.1 C and Bahraich 6.3 C, the Met Office said.

The maximum temperature too dipped sharply at many places. Bahraich recorded a day temperature of 11.6 C, eleven notches below normal, Gorakhpur 12.3 C, 12 degrees below normal, and Lucknow 16.4 C, seven degrees below normal, it said.

The Met Office forcast that most parts of the state will continue to witness dense fog in the next two days.
