Northeastern China's new animal vaccine production base the biggest in Asia

Shanghai. July 30. INTERFAX-CHINA -

The Harbin Veterinary Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences opened Asia's biggest animal vaccine production base in northeastern China's Heilongjiang Province, an official from the institute told Interfax on July 30.

"The production base can produce up to 9 billion bird flu animal vaccines a year," a general affairs official, surnamed Wang, said.

This is enough to immunize all the chickens in China, she said.

The base has sterile facilities to raise over 20,000 chickens for animal testing and will hold China's only bird flu antigen and vaccine bank.

The antigens stored in the bank can be used to produce 1 billion bird flu vaccines in a short period of time, Wang said.

In addition, the base will also produce vaccines and test kits to
prevent porcine reproductive and respiratory, or blue-eared pig disease.

The Harbin Veterinary Research Institute started construction of the
animal vaccine production base in September 2006 as part of the Harbin
National Biotechnology Base.

The institute is a national key laboratory, and developed China's first bird flu animal vaccine in 2002.
