The conjunctivitis epidemic raging in northern Vietnamese is the biggest in the last 10 years and will possibly last until October, doctors have said.

?The number of pinkeye patients has grown by geometric progression,? Doctor Hoang Cuong of the Central Eye Hospital said Monday.

Cuong?s hospital has received about 5,400 patients every month since June.

The Hanoi Eye Hospital also reported examining 40 patients daily, and up to 60 sometimes.

Hot weather, rain, and humidity facilitated the spread, Cuong said, but also blamed patients? carelessness.

?Many patients do not worry about not infecting others,? he said.

Many people did not clean their hands after touching patients? belongings and such direct contact caused 80 percent of infections, Cuong said.

Patients in Hanoi recently complained that stocks of an eye drops to treat the disease had run out at drugstores.
