DHHS reports first flu-related death for 2015-16 season

An adult in western North Carolina is the first death reported in connection with the 2015-16 flu season, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday.
The person died last week. DHHS, as is its policy, declined to identify the victim?s hometown, county, age and gender.

State health officials reported the first flu death in North Carolina this season with a person in western North Carolina. To protect the family?s privacy officials are not releasing the persons hometown, age, or gender but are saying this person had underlying health issues. People with underlying health issues are at higher risks to contract the flu, as well as the elderly, pregnant women and small children.

North Carolina continues to experience a lighter-than-expected 2015-16 flu season, with state health officials confirming Thursday just the third influenza-related death of the season.
The person who died last week was in the 25-to-49 age group, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. The first confirmed victim was age 65 or older, and the second in the 50-to-64 group.

State health officials confirm fourth flu-related death

North Carolina continues to experience a lighter-than-expected 2015-16 flu season, with state health officials confirming Thursday just the fourth influenza-related death.
The person who died last week was in the 25-to-49 age group, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Two confirmed victims are in the 25-to-49 age group, while there is one each in the 50-to-64 group and age 65 and older.

Flu-related death total increases to 37 in state, including first child

The number of North Carolinians dying from a flu-related illness has increased to 37 for the 2015-16 season, including the first child victim, state health officials said Thursday.
There were five deaths for the week that ended April 9.

There also were three additional deaths from previous weeks of the season, which officially began Oct. 1 and ended March 31.
Last week?s deaths included one victim between the ages of 5 and 17, one between 25 and 40, three between 50 and 64 and three there were 65 and older.
Altogether, one victim was between 5 and 17; eight victims were between 25 and 49; 16 were 50 to 64 years old, an increase of two; and 12 were in the 65-and-older group, an increase of one.
One flu-related death ? an adult in Western North Carolina ? was reported before the official start of the season.
