A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of an eighth-grade student who died following severe complications of the flu virus. According to a fundraising page set up on her family's behalf, Skyler McCardle had been admitted to Duke University Medical Center last week and was diagnosed with myocarditis, which is most commonly caused by viral infections in children.

Health department confirms 98 flu deaths in North Carolina so far in the 2018-19 season, including a 5-17 year old

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A total of 98 people in North Carolina have died from the flu this season, including one person between the age of 5 and 17, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

The latest flu numbers were released Feb. 23.

Those numbers included the first child-related flu death of the season. The child was between the age of 5 and 17. The other 97 flu-associated deaths reported this season have occurred in people 25 or older, with the largest number of fatalities (64) happening to patients 65 and older.

Health officials said 208 people died during last year’s flu season. Of those 208 deaths, 133 were people age 65 and older and five were under the age of 18.
