First Case of Measles Identified in North Carolina

MEDIA ADVISORY — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a case of measles in a child who was visiting Forsyth and Guilford counties. The child became ill while traveling to NC from another country where measles outbreaks have recently been reported. To protect the individual and their family’s privacy, no additional information about this individual will be released. This is the first confirmed case of measles in the state in 2025. NCDHHS is recommending all unvaccinated individuals ages one year and older receive measles vaccination to protect themselves and those around them...

A case of measles has been discovered in an unvaccinated child in Polk County, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced Dec. 31.

The child had visited locations in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, linked to a large ongoing measles outbreak in Upstate South Carolina. The child developed symptoms of measles before Christmas and has since recovered. To protect the family’s privacy, the health department is not releasing additional information about the child.

The state health department has been in communication with the South Carolina Department of Public Health since the beginning of their measles response. This is the second measles case recorded in North Carolina in 2025 and the first believed to be related to the South Carolina outbreak.​..

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — North Carolina health officials are warning the public after a person infected with measles traveled through Gaston County while contagious late last month.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and Gaston County Public Health say the individual was in the county on December 26, 2025. To protect the person’s privacy, no additional identifying details are being released.

Health officials say anyone who was at Constantine’s Restaurant, located at 1825 South New Hope Road in Gastonia, after 8:30 p.m. that night may have been exposed to measles. Those individuals are urged to monitor for symptoms through Jan. 16.​..

RALEIGH, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has identified two measles exposure locations in Gaston County that a person visited while infectious with measles.

DHHS officials told FOX Carolina that these exposures are linked to the ongoing Upstate outbreak.

Officials have defined the times of potential exposure at the following locations:

Constantine’s Restaurant, 1825 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia, after 8:30 p.m. on Dec. 26
Christmas Town USA in McAdenville, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 26

Officials said that the person did not visit any indoor locations at Christmas Town USA, so the risk of transmission of measles to others who were attending at the same time is low.​..

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Three siblings in Buncombe County contracted measles after visiting South Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and Buncombe County Health and Human Services (BCHHS) announced in Jan. 6 press releases.

According to NCDHHS, the family went to Spartanburg County, S.C., where there is a large measles outbreak, approximately one to two weeks before the children got sick.

No additional information will be released to protect the family’s privacy, according to the press release.

NCDHHS provided the following location and times of possible exposure:

Mission Hospital Emergency Department waiting room, located at 509 Biltmore Avenue in Asheville
Date: Jan. 4

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — As of Friday, Jan. 9, there are a total of 310 measles cases in South Carolina, mostly in Spartanburg County, including 99 new cases since Tuesday, according to S.C. health officials.

North Carolina is also dealing with measles, with a case recently confirmed on Friday in Rutherford County. This raises the state's total to five cases since late December, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).

While the number of measles cases in western North Carolina is in single digits, health officials are warning the public about just how quickly and easily it can spread, along with several other illnesses.

Health officials continue to remain focused on stopping it from spreading.​..

Union County Public Health has issued more than 170 quarantine orders tied to a measles exposure at Shining Light Baptist Academy in Monroe, officials said Friday.

Public Health Director Traci Colley ordered the quarantines under North Carolina communicable disease law after an unvaccinated child who attends the private school contracted measles connected to an outbreak in South Carolina. The child, who lives in Mecklenburg County, attended school while contagious.

Because of measles’ high transmissibility, public health officials said the entire school community is considered exposed. At this time, there are no confirmed measles cases in Union County, and no isolation orders have been issued. All quarantine orders apply only to students and staff at Shining Light Baptist Academy.​..

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - A person in Lincoln County, North Carolina tested positive for measles this week, the county health department announced Thursday.

The Lincoln County Health Department said Thursday that they were notified on Wednesday, Feb. 4 that an unvaccinated person tested positive for measles.

The age and identity of the person who tested positive were not reported as of Thursday afternoon.

The Lincoln County Health Department identified the following measles exposure sites in connection with this week’s positive case:

The Meating Place located at 114 East Main Street, Lincolnton, North Carolina 28092 -- between 3:30 p.m.-5:15 p.m.

MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Union County’s first confirmed measles case was reported in a school-aged child, county health officials say.

Union County Public Health, along with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, says the child does not attend school in Union County. The child sought care at American Family Care (AFC) Urgent Care in Indian Trail, where measles testing was conducted.

The child’s parent reported no known contact with individuals diagnosed with measles or experiencing similar symptoms, denied travel, and public exposure events were reviewed as part of the investigation. The child is outside of the infectious time frame, and no additional isolation measures are currently required for the individual, officials say.

As a result, individuals who visited AFC Urgent Care, located at 14001 E. Independence Blvd., Suite C, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, between 5:20 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. may have been exposed.​..

The new case was reported in an adult, according to a news release. The county said to protect the person’s privacy, no additional identifying information will be released.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – Following a recent influx of measles cases popping up across central North Carolina, health officials in Orange County are warning the public about a possible measles exposure after a person infected with the virus visited a local store last week.

According to a news release issued by the Orange County Health Department on Thursday, an individual with measles was at the Goodwill Store located at 115 Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill on Friday, Feb. 6.

Anyone who was at the store between 9 a.m. and noon may have been exposed, officials said.

Residents who believe they may have been exposed and have not been vaccinated against measles are urged to call the Orange County Health Department at 919-245-2400 and ask to speak with a communicable disease nurse to assess their risk.​..

Buncombe County confirms new measles case; exposure sites announced

Buncombe County health officials said Thursday that a new case of measles has been confirmed in an adult, bringing the county’s total to seven since the start of the year.

During a briefing with reporters, the county’s Public Health Director Ellis Matheson said the department is continuing contact tracing and urging residents to review their vaccination status.

The Buncombe County case was one of three new infections reported across the state in Friday’s update to the measles dashboard. North Carolina now has 21 confirmed cases since late December. Many of the infections across the state have been linked to a large outbreak in neighboring South Carolina, where 950 cases have been reported.

To protect the person’s privacy, no additional identifying information about the latest cases is being released.

Health officials said individuals may have been exposed at the following locations:

Novant Health GoHealth Urgent Care 349 New Leicester Highway, Asheville Feb. 4 | Noon to 3:45 p.m. Watch for symptoms through Feb. 25.

MAHEC Family Health Center – Biltmore 123 Hendersonville Road, Asheville Feb. 6 | 2:45 to 7:30 p.m. Watch for symptoms through Feb. 27.
