KANNAPOLIS, N.C. ? Health officials say a shigella outbreak in Cabarrus County is now community-wide after the number of people reporting symptoms has risen rapidly.

A statement from Cabarrus Health Alliance on Wednesday says the agency and the N.C. Division of Public Health say the connection between the outbreak and specific schools and institutions are no longer readily apparent...

Cabarrus County health officials issued a plea this week for people suffering from a growing shigellosis outbreak to stay home from school or their jobs.

With the number of suspected cases in the dozens, Suzanne Knight of the Cabarrus Health Alliance said a key to preventing the spread of the bacteria-caused intestinal illness is avoiding those who are healthy...

...Authorities say 64 people have reported symptoms of the infection, with 21 of those confirmed as having shigellosis...

2 local counties working together to fight Shigella outbreak

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. ?

Two local counties are working together tonight to stop the spread of a very contagious bacteria.

The first reports of the sickness came from Bethel Elementary School in early October and then spread to CC Griffin Middle School.

It then became a community-wide outbreak in Cabarrus County.

There are 152 reported cases in Cabarrus and 33 of those came back positive.

It spread to Rowan County where there are 10 confirmed cases...
