ARD plea on birds baffles villagers
Statesman News Service
RAMPURHAT, Nov. 17: Women belonging to various Self Help Groups (SHG) are in utter confusion following the issuance of a directive by the Animal Resources development department (ARD)
The ARD has clamped restrictions on the rampant rearing of chicken and ducks in all villages of the district after the detection of pathogenic virus H5N1 from poultry, early this year. The ARD has stopped providing chickens or ducks to the villagers and to the members of SHGs.
Interestingly, today at a meeting related to the National Livestock Development Week, the ARD authorities have urged villagers to rear birds. This appeal has baffled the villagers.
?We are puzzled because the ARD authorities have directed us to rear chickens and ducks with care. They have asked us to bring eggs laid by IRR chickens and Khaki Campbell ducks from the district's farm at Baramahula. However, when we asked them to supply us with chickens and ducks they did not comply to our request," said, Mrs Kisori Das, leader of Swayansidhha SHG of Sibpur village.
The women alleged that if they have to rear chickens with care they need proper guidelines about how to vaccinate these birds. However, they have not been given any instructions even after the outbreak of bird flu.
