North Bay child dies of flu-like illness

NORTH BAY ? A young North Bay child has died of flu-like symptoms, according to health officials.

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit issued a late-afternoon press release that reveals a young child under five years old with a flu-like respiratory illness died. A preliminary screening was positive for Influenza A. The case remains under investigation pending autopsy results, health officials said.

Second tragedy for Dagenais family

The Dagenais family was hit hard again last week on news that 16-month-old Evelyne Jos?e Dagenais, daughter of H?l?ne Cousineau and Randy Dagenais, North Bay, passed away from complications of influenza A H1N1.

Evelyne was the granddaughter of Roland and Micheline Dagenais, Val Rita.

Last week, the young girl was admitted to hospital in North Bay, where she remained for two days before succumbing to the illness.

At a news conference Monday night, North Bay?s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jim Chirico confirmed that as a result of a post-mortem examination determined the child died as a result of H1N1.

?Based on further testing, we are able to report the child in question is considered a death in a laboratory confirmed case of Influenza A H1N1. The cause of death remains under investigation,? said Dr. Chirico.
