Doctor Says More People Out Sick After Mardi Gras, Super Bowl Parties

NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans doctors are reporting a spike in visits and attributing a number of illnesses to some unlikely culprits.

Dr. Corey Herbert, WDSU medical editor said the Saints' success, Mardi Gras and a recent spell of cold weather may have left the city feeling like it has a hangover.

"We had the NFC championship that made almost everyone have a heart attack. Then, we had the Super Bowl. Then, with the cold weather, that's just what happens," he said, noting that high levels of stress, cold weather and close quarters can lead to many illnesses.

Herbert said he saw about 100 patients in the past few weeks dealing with a number of symptoms including runny noses, coughs, congestion and fever.

"We have to remember, people aren't really being very hygienic with the things they're doing. Everybody's hugging and kissing. Then, with the cold weather, that's just what happens," he said.

Song Park said several of his co-workers have called in sick in recent days.

"One of my co-workers -- he was out sick for six days. So, I think half of the staff has been out sick at one point or another," Park said.

Michael Ball said sick co-workers have been avoiding him.

"I've run into a couple at the office who had colds or they avoided me a little bit or kept their distance because they don't want to spread it and I don't want to get it," he said.

Herbert said most of the illnesses can be cured with over-over-the-counter medicines such as decongestants and expectorants. He also urged residents to remember to wash their hands and to sneeze and cough into their arms. He advised those feeling ill to stay at home and take vitamins.

Dr. Brobson Lutz discusses the differences between colds and the flu and what you can do if you have the flu.

Excerpts of the interview:

- Not reach any statistical level that I know of but Emergency absolutely packed after Mardi Gras.
- This is the flu
- Very effective antiviral, I strongly recommend Tamiflu, almost miraculous
- Best thing to do is contact your doctor so he can start you early on Tamiflu, if indeed you have the flu

More People Sick Lately

It's very likely you may be sick -- getting over an illness -- or someone you know is sick.

At C's Discount Pharmacy on Veterans -- Peter Crosby is in search of a cure. 'I think I might be sick with a bronchial infection," he says. And he doesn't cough and sniffle alone. "I know a bunch of people that were sick. A lot of my friends were sick."

"For some reason, we are seeing a higher incidence of illnesses, respiratory to be exact, over the last several weeks," says Doctor Clevis Parker with East Jefferson Internal Medicine. He says the uptick in viruses may be due to a couple of things we've been experiencing recently.

"You could attribute that somewhat to the crowds we've had during Mardi Gras. Possibly even the Super Bowl," he says.

Since viruses are airborne, they're easy to spread to others in a crowd. But the latest weather hasn't helped wellness either. "There is a higher incidence of respiratory illnesses when the weather does change and it fluctuates from the hot to the cold. But for the most part, it travels with cold weather," says Dr. Parker.

Peter isn't sure exactly how he's picked up his illness -- but he does have an idea. "I think the partying had something to do with it, but for the most part, I got sick when it was cold and rainy." He just hopes to find something to help.

Doctor Parker says the best over the counter therapies are vitamin c, zinc and something to break up congestion. Other than that -- wash your hands and cough into your sleeve. And go to the doctor if your fever doesn't go away. He also says a lot of people are having gastrointestinal problems right now.

New Orleans - Mardi Gras 2010 is a turning out to be an important milestone for the City of New Orleans.

City Hall has run attendance numbers and thinks this the largest Mardi Gras crowd since Hurricane Katrina.

Really, it's one of the largest ever.

New Orleans had between 1.2 and 1.5 million people pack into the city for Mardi Gras this year.

Last year, about one million people attended.

This year?s attendance statistics are impressive, even by pre-Hurricane Katrina standards. It adds up to a huge catch for the local economy; both in terms of dollars and publicity.

This weekend?s crowds created one of the highest Mardi Gras occupancy rates for area hotels.

"A lot of people stayed 5 nights. A lot of hotels were sold out for 5 nights. Normally, it's a 2-3 night stay," says Mavis Early of the Hotel and Lodging Association.

The official percentage city-wide was more than 90% full all five days of Mardi Gras.
