No truth to Penang quarantine talk
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Government has brushed aside rumours that a person has been quarantined at the Penang International Airport for suspected influenza A(H1N1).
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said it had received several calls from anxious members of the public about the matter at its operation room in Komtar Friday.
?It is not true at all. No one has been quarantined in the state so far,? he said, after handing out the senior citizen reward programme forms at the Caring Society Complex.
He added that state health department officers stationed at the airport were keeping an eye for anyone with symptoms of the virus.
?We have activated the standard operating procedure to check passengers.
?When there is an outbreak, people get concerned leading to all kinds of rumours but I assure the people that the state has taken all precautions and is prepared to face any eventuality,? he said.
When contacted, State Health Department director Dr Teh Leh Choo said it was not taking any risk and was going the extra mile to screen passengers at the Penang International Airport on both international and transit flights.
?We have also directed all local clinics and hospitals to be on the alert,? she said.
