Nine new cases take swine flu infections to 44

There seems to be no stopping swine flu in India. Nine more cases of H1N1 infection have come to light, taking the total count to 44 in the country. Five of the new cases were confirmed in Delhi, three in Bangalore and one in Hyderabad. Two of the Delhi infections were found to be human-to-human transmission, involving family members of two previously confirmed victims. “They are family contacts of the two positive cases reported Wednesday,” the health ministry said in a statement.
The other three were travelers who had visited the US, Japan and Australia.
The Bangalore cases involved a 12-year-old boy who had visited the US and two businessmen, aged 38 and 48, who flew in from the Thailand.
The Hyderabad case was an 8-year-old child who had traveled to the US. The IT city has reported the maximum number of cases in the country so far.
The nasal and throat swabs of many suspected victims have been sent to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) in Delhi for analysis. “So far, samples of 370 persons have been tested. Of these, 44 have been tested positive for (H1N1). Only four are indigenous cases who got the infection from the positive cases who traveled abroad,” the ministry statement added. Sixteen of the 44 patients have been cured of swine flu and discharged.
Despite the number of infections rising rapidly, health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said there was no reason for the country to panic yet. “There is nothing to worry. The situation is under control,” he said in Bhubaneshwar. Azad said that the number of cases were insignificant when taken as a percentage of India’s population.
Pointing out that the US, which has a much smaller population, has confirmed 18,000 cases and 44 fatalities, Canada 6,000 infections and Japan 3,000, he said, “Compared to these countries, the situation in India can be said to be fully under control.”......
Sounds like the U.S. just a few weeks ago. The flu is loose in India now, with a few differences -
* Bigger population
* More crowding
* Less medical infrastructure
