No new A(H1N1) deaths reported last week in Thailand</TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD class=default12>BANGKOK, Dec 2 (TNA) ? Thailand?s Ministry of Public Health in its weekly report on Wednesday confirmed that no new fatalities related to Influenza Type A(H1N1) have occurred, urging health offices nationwide to monitor any possible mutation between the A(H5N1) bird flu virus and A(H1N1) virus.
In its weekly report on the A(H1N1) situation in the country from November 23-29, Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said that the number of fatalities still stands at 187;) as no fatality was reported last week.
Regarding Thailand?s overall spread of the virus, the outbreak is still found in some areas and communities. Increasing numbers of local residents in several provinces have seasonal flu-like symptoms and pneumonia.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) report estimated that 7,826 people living in North America, Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia have so far died in the flu pandemic.
Following the death of a 23-year-old Vietnamese man infected with bird flu in Dien Bien province, Dr Paichit Varachit, the ministry?s permanent secretary, ordered upcountry provincial health offices to closely monitor the flu situation.
Dr Paichit said he has instructed heath officials nationwide to follow up patients suffering from chronic pneumonia and to make standard inquiries in such cases about their background, that is whether they had close contact with poultry.
He said the measure is aimed at preventing possible mutation of the A(H1N1) swine flu and the H5N1 bird flu viruses, which might mutate into a new virus strain, particularly in the lower northern and upper central parts of the country where the bird flu outbreak had been detected.
Dr Paichit added that officials concerned will convene to discuss upgraded measures against the avian influenza before forwarding it to the national committee on the H5N1 flu. (TNA):tiphat:http://enews.mcot.net/view.php?id=13083
