First human case of West Nile virus in New Mexico
The state Department of Health confirmed a Valencia County resident was hospitalized for the virus

VALENCIA COUNTY, N.M. —

The New Mexico Department of Health has confirmed the first human West Nile virus infection in 2025.

The resident is from Valencia County and was hospitalized after the infection. The virus has been confirmed in three horses across New Mexico.

Two of those horses were in Lea County and other horse was infected in Eddy County. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.​..
