The N.J. Department of Health & Senior Services is investigating if the death of a Hunterdon County teenager is due to the flu virus that has been gripping the region for the past several weeks, a department spokesperson confirmed on Friday.

Joey Karabin's community is mourning his Jan. 24 death that followed a brief illness, and wondering how it happened to the Delaware Valley High School sophomore and athlete, someone who had been so healthy, strong and full of life.
Joey died shortly before 11 p.m. that evening at the Hunterdon Medical Center and his death has shocked and saddened the community. County officials said after an autopsy on Jan. 25 that Joey's death wasn't caused by the flu ? which some had feared ? but was the result of complications from a "flu-like illness..."
