An outbreak of Coxsakievirus, also known as hand, foot, and mouth disease, has put a stop to the opening game at Pequannock High School, which was scheduled for later this week. Three high school students on the football team were reported to have the disease, according to a letter posted on the school's site by the Superintendent, Brett Charleston. After investigation, school officials announced that five football players had developed the disease, while another three players had fevers...

An outbreak of hand-foot-and-mouth disease that some are calling ?unprecedented? continues to spread across New Jersey.

The virus was discovered Thursday with members of the High Point High School and Wallkill Valley High School football teams, prompting the postponement both of the school?s Friday night games.

The disease also has been found in athletes at Don Bosco Prep, Pequannock High, Kinnelon High and Hunterdon Central High. All total so far, six New Jersey high schools in four counties have reported cases of HFMD in their athletes.

?It?s very unusual,? said Jack Kripsak, a sports medicine and family practice physician and also the chair of the state athletic association?s medical advisory board. ?The only thing I can speculate is that there?s a new strain of this virus in the air and people are coming down with it. It has to be something that people haven?t been exposed to before. It has to be a new strain. Otherwise, why would this be happening? No one?s ever seen this before.?...

Vernon High School has postponed Saturday?s varsity football game against Sparta High after one of its players came down with a confirmed case of hand-foot-and-mouth disease, marking the latest outbreak in a virus plaguing New Jersey high school sports programs this summer and fall.

The disease also has been found in athletes at Don Bosco Prep, Pequannock High, Kinnelon High and Hunterdon Central High, High Point High and Wallkill Valley High. All total so far, seven New Jersey high schools in four counties have reported cases of HFMD in their athletes...

Another week, another case of hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

Holmdel High School is the latest to get hit with the virus, prompting the school to postponed its varsity football game at Red Bank Regional Friday night after several players came down with the disease, according to a report by the Asbury Park Press.

The virus also has been found in athletes at Don Bosco Prep, Pequannock High, Kinnelon High, Hunterdon Central High, Wallkill Valley High and High Point High. All total so far, seven New Jersey high schools in five counties have reported cases of HFMD in their athletes.

The outbreak at Holmdel marks the first time the virus has been reported in Monmouth County...

Coxsackie virus not an 'ongoing outbreak'

With documented cases at a handful of high schools in the county in September, the New Jersey Department of Health has determined that the influx of hand, foot and mouth disease, a strain of Coxsackie virus, in the county isn't enough to declare it an "ongoing outbreak."

Hand, foot and mouth disease had been spreading, targeting football players at local high schools, but according to Dr. Donald Allegra, infectious disease consultant for Newton Medical Center, it is rather common this time of year.

"We see it every year and although we have been seeing more cases in our high schools, it is a disease that usually does not require hospitalization and will eventually run its course," said Allegra...
