SPARTA ? The Pope John XXIII Regional High School community was alerted Wednesday that three of its students have come down with chickenpox.

An urgent announcement was posted on the school's website Wednesday by Pope John officials informing parents and students of the virus, also referred to as Varicella, that causes itchy, blister-like lesions on the body. A fever generally tends to spike before the rash appears.

According to the announcement by Principal Gloria Shope and school President the Rev. Kieran McHugh, "chickenpox is usually not serious, however, it may cause more severe illness in some children leading to hospitalization."
