NEWTON ? The potentially deadly Powassan tick-borne virus has been confirmed in two Sussex County residents, one of whom died last month, state health officials confirmed Saturday.

The Powassan virus is spread by the deer tick. The illness is rarer than Lyme disease, which is also spread by the tick, but 10% of people who contract the illness die from it.

A Department of Health official on Saturday said that the department had not determined the cause of death for the patient who died last month but said that lab results this week confirmed that he had the virus...

A rare, often lethal virus carried by ticks has infected three people this summer in New Jersey, one of whom died, and caused the death of a New York state man. A man in southern Maine also was hospitalized with the disease late last month.

Powassan virus enters the body within minutes after someone is bitten by an infected tick. At least 10 percent of those who get sick die, scientists estimate, and those lucky enough to survive often suffer permanent damage, which may include partial paralysis or difficulty speaking.

There is no vaccine and no specific treatment. The best advice is to avoid tick bites.
