The Nigerian government is prepared to develop a national information center on biosafety, government official said in Abuja on Tuesday.
Mathew Dore, director of Biosafety Department of Nigeria's Ministry of Housing and Environment, said at a one-day capacity building workshop on "Biosafety Clearing House" (BCH) that the BCH project is to provide a "one-stop shop" where users can readily access or contribute relevant biosafety-related information.
In 1992, Nigeria ratified the U.N. Convention on Biosafety of 1988 which provides for the conservation of biological diversity.
The convention also provides for sustainable utilization of components of biological diversity and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.
Dore said that the workshop was to familiarize participants with the BCH, and with how to store and manage information on them.
The workshop was organized by the ministry in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme and the Global Environment Facility for environment correspondents and other stakeholders.
