Nigeria: 48 die from gastroenteritis in Nigeria

48 die from gastroenteritis in Nigeria - Gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, has killed 48 people in two Nigerian states in the north, the same region where cholera has claimed 360 lives so far this year, the local press reported Tuesday.

In Yobe state, 42 people were killed and 443 other infected by the disease in 10 local government areas of the state within the past week, the report said, quoting health officials.

In Katsina, the disease has killed six persons and infected 50.

A representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Isa Aremu, indicated that the disease, which has to do with 'watery passage of stool and vomiting', physically looks like cholera but that necessary tests are not available in the area to confirm it.

A cholera epidemic in Bauchi and Borno states has killed 360 people and infected over 5,000 others.

Health experts blame the outbreak on the pollution of sources of drinking water by flooding from heavy rains.
