Nigeria: Sokoto Intensifies Action On Bird Flu

Sokoto State government says it is poised towards ensuring that avian influenza, popularly known to as bird flu, is effectively curbed in the state.

The state Commissioner, Ministry for Animal Health and Fisheries Development, Alhaji Kabiru Aminu Tafida who stated this Sokoto, said part of the efforts towards the control of avian influenza was the presentation of control and preventive materials against the disease to desk officers of the 23 local government areas in the state.

Speaking at the presentation of the materials yesterday, the commissioner stressed the need for the cooperation of the desk officers to achieve the set objective of curbing the spread of the disease.

The commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Alhaji Sambo Bello Dan Chadi, acknowledged the efforts of the World Bank and the state government towards preventing poultry and citizens from contacting the disease. He said in addition to the provision of working materials, seminars and workshops have been conducted to enlighten the people about the disease and curtail its spread. Alhaji Tafida said veterinary clinics had also been established in the state to check the disease.
