Nigerian authorities said Monday that a doctor in Lagos who treated a Liberian victim of Ebola has contracted the virus, the second confirmed case in sub-Saharan Africa's largest city.

"This new case is one of the doctors who attended to the Liberian Ebola patient who died," said Health Ministeebr Onyuchi Chukwu.

The minister told journalists that 70 other people believed to have come into contact with the Liberian are being monitored, eight of whom have been placed in quarantine at a facility in Lagos.

Re: Nigeria says doctor who treated Ebola victim has contracted virus

Does anybody know how Patrick Sawyer, the consultant at the Liberian Finance Ministry contracted ebola in the first place?

Re: Nigeria says doctor who treated Ebola victim has contracted virus

It is thought that Patrick Sawyer contracted Ebola from his sister, Princess Sawyer, while she was at hospital in Monrovia for treatment due uncontrollable bleeding because of a miscarriage., There he was exposed to her blood. she died there on July 7th. A Dr. at that hospital who had contact with her also died.

Patrick Sawyer collapsed at Lagos airport on july 20th. IIRC, One or two ~70 persons who had contact with Patrick Sawyer at airport are symptomatic and in quarantine .

When hospitalized in Lagos, Patrick Sawyer denied having any contact with anyone withe Ebola.

Thanks Sonny. This report claims that 8 people are now quarantined, which I would presume means that they have a fever or other symptoms.

Thanks Vibrant62,

yes, I see that there are 8 in quarantine and 3 are symptomatic..

A quarantine unit has been set up in Lagos and blood tests from the three people displaying Ebola-like symptoms have been sent for testing, with results expected later on Monday, the minister further said

Re: Nigeria says doctor who treated Ebola victim has contracted virus

One thing that may be worth monitoring as details emerge is which contacts are symptomatic: casual contacts or medical contacts.

Also, there appears to be little news out of Togo and Ghana where there were stopovers with regard to contact tracing and monitoring. Has anyone seen any reports from here?

Ebola death toll rises to 887, Nigeria cases increase - WHO

GENEVA Aug 4 (Reuters) - The death toll from the world's worst Ebola outbreak had risen to 887 by Aug. 1, while the total number of cases in the four West African countries affected stood at 1,603 on the same date, the World Health Organization said on Monday.

Nigeria, the latest country to import the disease, has had up to four cases, of which three are classed as 'probable' Ebola and one as 'suspected', the Geneva-based agency said in a statement.

Breaking: 4 Nigerians test positive to Ebola symptoms, medical doctor confirmed to have contracted disease
By News Express on 04/08/2014

Nigeria?s Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, today confirmed a second case of Ebola in the country, less than two weeks after Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer died in a Lagos hospital days after arriving in Nigeria from Liberia.

Prof. Chukwu, who spoke in Abuja during the inauguration of a treatment research group for Ebola in Nigeria, said that test samples are pending for three other people who had shown symptoms of Ebola, and that authorities are trying to trace and quarantine others. The confirmed second case in Nigeria is a doctor who had helped treat Mr. Sawyer, who died July 25 on his way to Calabar for an international conference.

?Three others who participated in that treatment who are currently symptomatic have had their samples taken and hopefully by the end of today we should have the results of their own test,? Chukwu said.

According to the Minister, 70 people are now placed under surveillance while eight people would be quarantined on Monday for developing symptoms of the disease...

I wonder if they are among the people he reportedly urinated on.

FrontPageAfrica has now learned that upon being told he had Ebola, Mr. Sawyer went into a rage, denying and objecting to the opinion of the medical experts. “He was so adamant and difficult that he took the tubes from his body and took off his pants and urinated on the health workers, forcing them to flee."

Nigerian health authorities said they had confirmed a second case and quarantined eight additional people, all of whom helped treat a Liberian-American who died of the disease in Lagos in July.
....
Mr. Sawyer, a consultant at the Liberian Finance Ministry, had recently seen his sister die from Ebola and was exhibiting the virus's hallmark symptoms by the time he arrived in Lagos from Monrovia on July 20, said Jide Idris, Lagos State's health commissioner. The consultant told hospital workers he thought he was suffering from malaria for two days, during which time they didn't take the precautions such as wearing protective suits that are typically prescribed to prevent Ebola's spread.
