New polio virus case confirmed in Borno

MONDAY, 22 NOVEMBER 2010

NIGERIA has confirmed a new case of poliovirus in Borno State, which has paralysed a four-year old boy in Bolori II Ward of Maiduguri Local Council.
According to Nigeria Polio Alert published yesterday by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), this is the fourth Type 1 wild poliovirus case recorded in Borno this year and the 11th case of the virus recorded in the country in 2010. Experts now consider Borno State a poliovirus reservoir.

Meanwhile, NPHCDA is leading a nationwide oral polio vaccination campaign that began at the weekend in which all children under five years should be vaccinated to protect them from the Wild Polio Virus (WPV)

Executive Director, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, told The Guardian yesterday that the campaign in southern states would be from Saturday November 20 to Tuesday November 23; and November 27 to November 30 in the northern states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Pate said the incidence of polio has reduced by 98 per cent since 2009, but as demonstrated by this recent case in Borno, the virus still threatens Nigerian children.
