Abuja ? Malaria kills about 300,000 people in Nigeria annually with about 97 per cent of the population at risk of infection while an estimated 800,000 people die every year from malaria, with approximately 90 per cent of these deaths occurring in Africa where malaria accounts for about one in six of all childhood deaths.This was disclosed yesterday in a press statement by the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) to mark this year's World Malaria Day.

Malaria kills 4,500 expectant mothers yearly in Nigeria

Ogun State Commissioner for Health Dr Kunle Salako yesterday said malaria killed about 4,500 expectant women yearly in Nigeria.

He urged Nigerians to take its prevention and treatment seriously because of its fatality.

According to him, 80 out of 100,000 expectant women in Ogun State were killed yearly by malaria, adding that the disease remained a major public health challenge in Nigeria.

Salako spoke in Abeokuta, the state capital, at a symposium on Malaria in pregnancy, organised by a non-governmental organisation, Support for National Malaria Programme (SuNMaP).

He said malaria is transmitted through anopheles mosquito bite, adding that Nigeria lost about N132billion to fighting the disease.

Malaria claims 84 lives in Nigeria's Gombe State in 2010 14:02, July 03, 2011

A total of 84 deaths were recorded from the 26,494 cases of malaria in Nigeria's Gombe State in 2010, health officials have disclosed.

State officer in charge of malaria control in the area Adama Muazu disclosed this on Friday at a ceremony to mark the World Malaria Day.

She said out of the figure, 3,308 were pregnant women, 10,427 were children under ages 0-5, while 12,759 were children above five years.
