One person died from lassa fever in Nasarawa State.
The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Health, Emmanuel Akabe, on Thursday confirmed that there is an outbreak of Lassa fever in Lafia, which has so far claimed the life of one person.
Mr. Akabe, who confirmed the death of the victim in an interview in Lafia, said the victim died on Tuesday at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital.
He said that the infected person was admitted into the hospital last week with symptoms of severe fever and bleeding.
The commissioner explained that these symptoms prompted the medical personnel to send his blood specimen to the Lassa fever diagnostic centre at Irua in Edo, where he was confirmed positive to lassa infection.

Bauchi ? The Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency has warned people of the state to take proactive measures to protect themselves against Lassa fever as the disease recently killed a medical doctor. It was gathered that the doctor became infected after he treated a patient with Lassa fever virus.

Executive chairman of the agency, Dr Nisser Ali Umar, while briefing newsmen yesterday as part of the sensitization exercise embarked upon to educate citizens on the dangers of the disease said: "The disease is deadly and infectious. Recently, a medical doctor got infected by the disease after treating a patient who had the fever. The doctor died and about eight other doctors got infected after treating a pregnant woman, who had the disease".

Lassa fever kills doctor, nurse in Bauchi

Lassa fever virus killed a medical doctor and nurse in Bauchi after giving treatment to patient with the virus in Tafawa Balewa local government of the state.

The Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Nisser Ali Umar who disclosed this said the state had recorded seven confirmed cases of Lassa fever between 2012 to March 2013 and with only one death of a medical doctor and explained that both Federal and State Government had taken adequate steps to address the menace of the disease.

He said ?the disease is deadly and infectious; recently one medical doctor was infected after he treated victims with the virus, he died, also about eight medical doctors were also infected by the disease after they had treated a pregnant woman that also has the virus and they were taken preventive medicine?.

Lassa fever kills five in Bauchi

Five persons were confirmed death of suspected cases of Lassa fever in villages of Jamda Badas and Maciyar Kuka in Tafawa Balewa Local government Area of Bauchi state in 2013.

Our correspondent gathered that over 55 peoples were affected, five died including a doctor and a nurse with three others, many are receiving treatment and some have been discharged.

It was revealed that several people in the community were affected with the Lassa fever virus in the area, which prompted the Bauchi state government to report the cases to the Federal government for necessary assistant.

Nigeria: FG Provides 10,000 Amples Drug for Lassa Fever in Bauchi State

Dr Nisser Umar, Executive Secretary, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, said the Federal Government had provided 10,000 ampules of Ribavirin, for the treatment of Lassa fever

Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Bauchi that cases of Lassa fever were common after the harvest period.

Umar said that although seven cases were confirmed, unfortunately, the patients died of the disease...

Lassa fever kills pregnant woman in Ebonyi

A pregnant woman identified as Mrs. Bridget has been killed by Lassa fever at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) in Ebonyi State. It was gathered that the woman who was brought from a nearby village in Izzi council area to the gynaecological ward of the teaching hospital died after vain efforts made by doctors to save her life.

A source in the ward said the woman was put in isolated ward when it was discovered that she was suffering from Lassa fever, adding that blood gushed out from her mouth when she was brought to the hospital.

The source also hinted that following the death of the woman in the ward, all the health workers that attended to the woman before she died would be screened to ascertain whether any of them contracted the disease from the patient.

A medical personnel has been diagnosed to have Lassa fever at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, the fever transmitted through a multi-mammary gland rats.
The medical personnel, who was brought in from Oke-Ogun area of the state, was diagnosed with the fever after samples of his blood was sent for screening in Lagos.
Professor Abiodun Otegbayo, UCH?s Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, said he was admitted with fever and other symptoms suggestive of a viral flu and the tendency to bleed from opening on the body.

At least 100 people have died in a nationwide outbreak of Lassa fever, health officials said on Friday, but the federal government insists that only 20 people have died in the 10 states where it says about 319 cases have so far been reported.
The programme director of Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Prof Abdulsalami Nasidi, who made this known Weekly Trust, said the affected states are Anambra, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Nasarawa, Ondo, Plateau and Taraba.
Nasidi did not give state-by-state details of the outbreak or when they were reported, but other medical experts say the recent outbreak of Lassa fever across the country may have been the worst in recent times, with about one hundred deaths recorded in February alone. Officials at research and documentation centre of the Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo state, designed specifically for the treatment of Lassa fever, said out of the about 190 cases reported there in February, at least 100 died, while about 40 remained in critical condition.

One person has been confirmed dead and five others lying critically ill in two hospitals following the outbreak of Lassa fever in Plateau State.

Confirming the outbreak and the death of one victim, the Deputy Director, Epidemiology in the State Ministry of Health, Dr Raymond Juryit, said there are cases of suspected Lassa fever in the state and four of the infected persons are being treated at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Jos, while one other is hospitalised at a hospital in Jingri, Bassa local government area of the state. He also confirmed that one person died of the fever at BUTH...

The doctors and other health workers were said to have contracted the dreaded disease after they participated in a surgical operation on a pregnant woman at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki (FETHA). It was gathered that the pregnant woman and her baby, who later died few days after they were discharged from the hospital, were suspected to have died due to Lassa fever infection. THE Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Ebonyi State chapter Thursday revealed that no fewer than 25 people have been killed by the deadly Lassa fever in the state.
The association said eight doctors, four nurses and five other health workers are feared to have contacted the lassa fever after they participated in operating a pregnant woman at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) and have been moved to Edo State for further treatment.
According to NMA, the pregnant woman and her baby (names withheld) later died a few days after they were discharged from the hospital.
The breakdown, according to NMA, shows that ?in 2005, we lost five nurses who died of Lassa fever contracted in the cause of their duty. In 2008, we had six cases and two doctors died in the cause of treating them. In 2011, we had seven cases and two deaths. In 2012, they were 20 cases with six deaths. In 2013, they were 21 cases with eight deaths. In 2014, we have, so far, 18 cases and two deaths.?

Abakaliki ? The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Ebonyi State branch, rose from meeting at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA2), on Saturday with a call to the Federal Government to, as a matter of emergency, establish a virology diagnosis centre in the South East geo-political zone to save the inhabitants of the area from Lassa fever.

The association explained that the reported 25 cases of deaths arising from the Lassa fever is an understated as many other incidents of deaths arising from the diseases might have occurred in the far-to-reach villages without being recorded...

Abakaliki ? Still battling with the outbreak of Lassa fever in Ebonyi State, the state Commissioner for Health, Sunday Nwangele, on Tuesday, revealed that out of the 11 meadical doctors and five nurses suspected to be down with the disease, six have tested positive to Lassa Fever.

He said the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, had already sent to the state the out-of-stuck injectable rebravine and the rebravine tablets for those who are down with the disease and those who had come in contact with the victims respectively...

In Ebonyi State many health workers are at the mercy of Lassa fever, writes IHUOMA CHIEDOZIE, who visited the state

Ebonyi State is used to intermittent outbreaks of Lassa fever but the latest episode caught everyone, including highly experienced medical practitioners in the state, napping.

Lassa fever normally appears during the dry season, when farmers burn their farmlands to prepare for the next farming season. The flames drive a particular specie of rat, which hosts the disease, out of the burning bushes and into human habitations where they interact with food items and eventually infect people. But that was not the case this time around.

The latest outbreak came in the middle of the rainy season, a development which Dr. Emma Okeke of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki 1, described as ?amazing.?

Nobody suspected that Lassa fever was around when a pregnant woman was taken to the theatre for surgery at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki 1. But the manner in which she died after giving birth to a baby, who also died later, raised suspicions of Lassa fever...

Perennial Lassa fever ravages Ebonyi; residents live in fear

Ebonyi State is now under siege of Lassa fever as residents and health workers now live in fear of contracting the deadly disease. The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), only last week raised the alarm that 16 health workers including eight doctors from Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA) have contracted the disease and are now on danger list.
On Tuesday, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sunday Nwangele confirmed that six out of the 11 doctors and five nurses who rushed to the virology laboratory in Irrua Edo State tested positive to the disease.

Lassa Fever kills 4 in Plateau

No fewer than four persons were confirmed death and 11 others infected in Jos South, Bassa and Jos North local government areas of Plateau state, following an outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state.

The outbreak of the disease was confirmed yesterday by the Plateau state Epemidiologist, Dr. Raymond Juryit.

The Epemitologist said: ?So far, the state ministry health has recorded 15 cases and four had died from the disease?.

100 feared dead as Lassa fever hits Bauchi
More than 100 people, mostly adults, have reportedly died at Maciyar Kuka, Jamda and Badas villages in Bununu town, headquarters of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The 56-year-old village head of Badas, Malam Inusa Adam, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent. He said that the sign of the ailment was the same in each of the dead persons.

He said that Bununu, where the hospital is situated, is about eighty kilometres from the village.

?People are dying every day here in this town of Jamda. In this village alone, we have lost over 26 youths to this symptom and there are three other neighbouring villages facing the same challenges.? The Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital (UCH), Professor Temitope Alonge has denied speculations that the hospital is treating an Ebola Virus patient .
Alonge while addressing journalists on Saturday in Ibadan said that the patient who was brought in early hours of Thursday was only discovered to have lassa fever and not ebola as speculated.
The UCH CMD who acknowledged that both Ebola and Lassa are of the same hemorrhagic fever explained that unlike Ebola, Lassa fever is treatable and manageable. He said the hospital has treated fifteen cases of lassa fever since 2011 with one survivor.
While allaying the fears of the members of the public on the false report, the CMD stressed that the arrival of the index case in the country was not what spurred preparations and awareness against contagious diseases by the hospital.
?Four days ago, a patient was admitted to West West three after she put to bed. It was observed that she was bleeding continuously after the delivery and there was the fear of what it could be. Test was carried out on her and it was discovered that she had developed fever after delivery. She died while undergoing treatment.
?Also, there was another case of a young driver who was brought in from Lagos unconsciously in the early hours of Thursday. The nurses on duty had to screen and test him but because he was unconscious, the test had to be conducted extensively. The efforts of the nurses revealed that the patient had jaundice but when assessment commenced, the diagnosis of the blood sample showed lassa fever. Immediately, the patient was moved to the e-tent from the triad bay for necessary treatments, but unfortunately, the patient died at about 8: 45pm Friday?, Alonge said

Oyo confirms outbreak of lassa fever

Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever in the state in western Nigeria, assuring that the government is on top of the situation as well as curtailing it.

Gbadegesin, who, according to a PM News report, disclosed this to journalists in Ibadan, said that the government is aware of 10 cases of Lassa fever, adding that out of the 10 cases, three were brought into the state from another state.

some of the cases reported at UCH during the outbreak of Ebola in Nigeria were actually Lassa fever cases, adding, ?some patients that came to UCH thinking that they had Ebola were later diagnosed of Lassa fever. Lassa fever has drug. It can be treated if promptly reported.?

For the residents of Ikire, a neighbouring town to Ibadan, Oyo State capital, only time will heal the wound of the family that lost two children to Lassa fever. It all started with the young Aisha (not real name) falling ill and developing high body temperature, cough, diarrhoea, vomiting and headache and was treated at the health centre for malaria. Days after, she died and the parents were thrown into mourning.

Unfortunately, her three-year-old younger brother, also fell ill and with the same symptoms and as such the parents were referred to a teaching hospital in Ibadan, where subsequently he was diagnosed to have Lassa fever...
