Kano govt appeals to farmers against new chickens

Kano State Government has appealed to poultry farmers in the state whose farms were ravaged by the recent bird flu scourge to desist from injecting fresh chickens into their poultry.

The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resource, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Kano, Saturday.

He said poultry keepers should wait until the farms were disinfected and certified safe before they could restock.

The commissioner explained that the state government was fumigating the farms, and that it would take three weeks before they could be declared fit for business once more.

Garba warned that should the farmers ignore the government? s advice ?then, they are on their own should the chickens get afflicted by the Avian flu again?. [Dangerous attitude....]

The commissioner dismissed allegations by the state?s branch of the Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria that the state government was dragging the issue of assisting its members affected by the epidemic.

He noted that arrangements were in top gear to actualise the payment of compensation to the farmers and that due process must be followed before any payment was made.

He noted that the state government had made representations to the federal government on the issue and that a response on the matter was being awaited.
