Fresh cases of Bird flu in Kano, Lagos

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Thursday announced that there has been unusual high mortality in two poultry farms and live bird markets in Kano and Lagos States.

It said samples forwarded to the National Veterinary Research Institute tested positive for H5 strain of Avian Influenza Virus, otherwise known as bird flu, adding that confirmatory samples were sent to the International Reference Laboratory in Padova, Italy, for further characterisation.

Avian influenza, known informally as Avian flu or bird flu, refers to influenza caused by viruses adapted to birds. Influenza, commonly known as ‘flu’ is an infectious disease caused by the influenza virus.

The ministry, in a statement, noted that it had taken some measures in the affected sites to contain the reported outbreaks. According to the FMARD, it had quarantined the infected premises and placed restriction of movement of poultry and poultry products into and out of areas around infected premises.

Nigeria: Kano Confirms Six Cases of Avian Influenza, Warns Against Contamination

Kano — SIX fresh confirmed cases of deadly avian influenza virus were announced Fridaday by Kano State Ministry of Agriculture.

Briefing Journalists commissioner for agriculture and natural resources in Kano, Alh. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, posited that six cases of the bird flu were confirmed of the 10 reported cases in the state.

Gawuna revealed that the virus were discovered in some commercial farmers in four local government areas including Kumbotso, Gwale, Tofa and Mingibir, insisting the identification of the farms would not be disclosed for security reason.

The confirmation further authenticated Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development earlier detection of unusual high mortality of birds in two poultry farms and live bird markets in Kano.

The federal government said samples forwarded to the National Veterinary Research Institute tested positive for H5 strain of Avian Influenza Virus, otherwise known as bird flu, adding that confirmatory samples were sent to the International Reference Laboratory in Padova, Italy, for further characterization.

However, the commissioner stressed that affected locations are currently being depopulated while detoxification had commenced but was quick to warn owners of farms and markers to report suspected cases to the ministry for immediate action.

" We have notice action on the suspected cases few weeks ago and we have seen commenced all necessary effort to curtail further spread. Already we have depopulated the locations for effective management. We earlier have 10 reported cases but 6 is currently confirmed at various locations in 4 local government areas". Alh. Bird Flu Hits Five Additional States

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. AKinwumi Adesina, has said that Nigeria was not in a bird flu epidemic (Avian Influenza), as the disease has hit only seven states of the federation.

Adesina who briefed journalists Wednesday in Abuja disclosed that a total of 140,390 birds have been associated with H5N1 virus bird flu exposures, while 22, 573, which represents 16 per cent mortality was recorded.

He said Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Edo and Plateau states now have so far recorded cases of bird flu in addition to Kano and Lagos states, which was reported last week. “We can now confirm that the cases were due to the H5N1 virus.

We are not in any state of epidemic, seven states have so far reported cases of the bird flu: Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Edo and Plateau states. To date, 21 commercial farms, 9 live bird markets and one private zoo have been affected in the seven states.”

Mr. Adesina said all veterinary members of staff of the ministry had been deployed across the country to bring the situation under control, saying that the country was not in a state of bird flu epidemic.

He said the federal government, in collaboration with the Government of Canada, had supported the Veterinary Research Institute, Vom, Plateau, to acquire BSC level 3 facility for biosecurity.

He said development partners such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Inter African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had been duly informed about the outbreak.

?We have successfully controlled it in the past and have activated all necessary protocols and measures to ensure successful control this time,? he said.

Mr. Adesina said that the biotype of the disease had been confirmed, saying that it was due to H5N1 virus.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that bird flu outbreak was first recorded in Nigeria in 2006.
It lingered till 2008 before it was contained.

Bird flu outbreak confirmed in Ogun

The Ogun State government Monday confirmed the outbreak of Avian Influenza otherwise known as bird flu in the state.

The state commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs Ronke Sokefun made this disclosure while addressing newsmen in Abeoukuta, the Ogun State capital yesterday.

She said samples from Sango, Sagamu and Ifo live birds market tested positive to the highly pathogenic bird flu.

She said samples of birds taken from another poultry farm on Obalende-Ikangba Road in Odogbolu Local Government area of the state had tested positive to the disease.

Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, had on January 21 in newspaper reports, listed Ogun State as one of the seven states harbouring the bird flu virus.

She noted the discovery was made after a state-wide surveillance and live bird market decontamination exercise initiated along the border towns of Sango, Ifo, Akute, Sagamu, and Mowe-Ibafo axis, considering their nearness to Lagos.

Minister confirms bird flu outbreak in 11 states

THE Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, on Wednesday confirmed the outbreak of bird flu in 11 states of the federation.

Adesina announced that the Federal Government had approved N145 million to compensate farmers affected by the outbreak of the disease.

He made the disclosure at an emergency meeting on Avian Influenza with state commissioners for agriculture in Abuja.
The minister directed that the compensation should be paid to the farmers within 72 hours.

Adesina named the states affected by the outbreak of the disease as Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Imo, Oyo and Jigawa states.

According to him, as at Jan. 21, a total of 139, 505 birds had been exposed with 22, 173 mortality recorded and as at Jan. 27, 232,385 were exposed and 51, 444 mortality recorded.

OYO State has recorded cases of Avian Influenza in some farms and live poultry markets within the Ibadan metropolis, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan, Professor Gbenga Oyeyemi, has disclosed.

He disclosed this during a one-day seminar to create awareness among poultry farmers and other stakeholders in Oyo State, organised by the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Moor Plantation, Ibadan.

This also confirmed what the Minister of Agriculture, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, said on Wednesday that the viral disease had spread to 11 states in the country, including Oyo State.

The dean revealed that samples brought from Bodija and Agbowo markets, as well as some farms at Egbeda area of the metropolis tested positive to Avian Influenza, urging farmers to be on the alert and report suspected cases to the appropriate quarters to curtail the spread.

He warned farmers and marketers to desist from hoarding information about suspected cases to prevent transmission to humans and other farms.

However, chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Oyo State chapter, said no case of bird flu had been reported in the state, adding that he and PAN were actively monitoring situations and farms in the state.

Kaduna State has being confirmed to be among the states where the case of bird flu has recently broke out, the state Government has yesterday confirmed a case at a poultry farm in Mando area of state.

Dr Joseph Thot, the Commissioner for Health said at a news briefing in Kaduna that the government had taken concrete measures to prevent the disease from spreading.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has disclosed that the government would compensate the 39 poultry farms affected by avian influenza across the country with the sum of N145.145 million within 72 hours.

Adesina disclosed this at an emergency stakeholders? meeting he held with state commissioners and stakeholders in agriculture last week in Abuja.

The Minister stated that over 100,100 birds have already been de-populated, hence, the role of the quarantine services has become very crucial. He said to reduce the losses on the part of the affected poultry farmers, government pegged the rate value of each bird at N1,450.

He also restated the need to establish laboratory diagnostic facilities in all the states of the federation, adding that mo*bile laboratories would also be needed. He tasked the private sector to consider setting up laboratories to support govern*ment?s efforts.

The Supervising Minister of Health, Dr Khaliru Alhassan, on Monday advised Nigerians not to panic over the outbreak of Avian Influenza, saying the situation was under control.

?The federal government confirmed the outbreak of Avian influenza in two commercial poultry farms and a live bird market in Kano and Lagos states, respectively.

``Since then, further outbreaks have been confirmed in 16 other states by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture as at Feb. 2.

?You will recall that prior to this outbreak, the last case of Avian influenza in poultry was confirmed in August 2008 during the last outbreak which commenced in January 2006,?? he said.

He said that during the outbreak, the Federal Government established a multi-sectoral response plan involving key government agencies and development partners.

He enjoined the public to maintain good hygiene and ensure regular hand wash to prevent infectious diseases.

?The public should avoid eating sick or dead birds as well as avoid unnecessary exposure to poultry facilities.

?The public should also report severe symptoms of respiratory illness to the nearest health facility, especially where there is a history of contact with sick poultry,? he said.

Alhassan said pandemic response plan had been concluded and activated over the influenza, adding that copies of the plan would be made available to all strategic partners, soon.

He also said that special public enlightenment messages had been prepared and would soon be released to the public.

Alhassan said all state Ministries of Health had been alerted on the outbreak and advised to reactivate their Avian Influenza Control mechanisms that were established during the last outbreak

Seven More H5N1 Avian Flu Outbreaks in Central Nigeria

NIGERIA - Seven new outbreaks of high-path H5N1 avian flu have been reported in central Nigeria, affecting almost 32,000 poultry.

Seven new outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza in central Nigeria have been reported in Follow-up Report No.5 dated 2 March from the national veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The outbreaks started between 30 January and 26 February, six in the state of Plateau and one in Nasarawa. One backyard flock and six commercial flocks, mainly laying hens, were affected, and all were on deep litter systems.

In total, 31,741 birds were involved, 3,655 of which died and 28,086 were destroyed.
