Health workers strike claims 20 patients in Katsina

No fewer than 20 patients have so far died in Mashi, Katsina State, as a result of the strike embarked upon by health workers. Mohammed Aliyu, leader of the First Aid Group that had been assisting abandoned patients, said this in Mashi on Friday. Aliyu spoke while receiving drugs worth N200,000 donated to patients by Mansir Ali, a CPC aspirant for Mashi/Dutsi Federal Constituency.
He said most of the victims were children who died as a result of convulsion, malaria and diarrhoea. Aliyu said the group had treated more than 146 patients since the commencement of the industrial action which entered the ninth day on Friday.
He said 20 other patients were currently on admission at the temporary camp provided by the state government after they were forced out of the public hospital. Aliyu commended the donor for the gesture and urged other politicians and well-to-do individuals in the local government area to emulate his gesture.
He said the call became imperative due to the fact that the patients were in dire need of medical assistance due to the strike. Earlier, Ali said the gesture was to assist needy patients who had been abandoned in the pubic hospital due to the strike.
