Maiduguri, Borno State, 9 June 2026 – The international medical humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is supporting the Borno State Ministry of Health (MoH) to respond to a rapidly evolving surge in suspected cholera cases across Borno State, where more than seven thousand people have fallen ill since early May 2026, placing significant strain on health facilities and response capacity.

The state is seeing a high influx of patients requiring urgent treatment, with numbers increasing significantly each day since the first suspected case was reported on 1 May 2026. As of 7 June 2026, Borno State MoH had recorded 7,850 suspected cholera cases across 14 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 50 wards, and a total of 74 deaths reported both at facility and community levels.

On 7 May 2026, MSF, in collaboration with the State MoH, established a Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) in Ngarannam area, in the state capital, Maiduguri City, to support the response. Since then, admissions have increased rapidly, forcing the expansion of bed capacity from 121 to 271 beds to accommodate growing needs, with a potential to expand further. MSF also opened a new 20-bed Cholera Treatment Unit (CTU) at Dalaram area in Maiduguri.

As of 7 June 2026, MSF had treated a total of 7,439 patients at the MSF-run CTC and CTU, representing an average of 230 admissions per day. On 5 June alone, MSF received more than 500 patients with acute watery diarrhoea, marking the highest number admitted in a single day since the response began.

"Every day, we see more people arriving with severe watery diarrhoea and dehydration, many of whom have travelled long distances to reach care," says Bienfait Tombola, MSF project medical coordinator for the surge response in Maiduguri. "The collaboration between the Ministry of Health, MSF and other partners has enabled a rapid scale-up of several aspects of the response, but the continued increase in cases shows that more needs to be done to prevent transmission and ensure people can access care as early as possible."

Cholera Outbreak Kills Nine ISWAP Terrorists in Timbuktu Triangle
By: Zagazola Makama

A cholera outbreak has reportedly claimed the lives of nine fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Timbuktu Triangle, a known terrorist stronghold in Borno State, intelligence sources have disclosed.

The sources told Zagazola Makama that the outbreak had spread through the group’s enclaves, highlighting deteriorating sanitary conditions and limited access to medical care within the insurgents’ camps.

According to the intelligence, two additional ISWAP fighters infected with the disease were allegedly executed by fellow terrorists after attempts to manage their condition at Kimba village proved unsuccessful.

The sources said the development pointed to the worsening health conditions within the terrorist hideouts, where sustained military pressure has disrupted logistics, including access to medicines and treatment facilities...

22 July 2026 - In Borno state, northeastern Nigeria, thousands of people have been affected by a rapid surge in suspected cholera, leaving healthcare facilities overwhelmed while healthcare workers struggle to keep pace.

Among those affected is 13-year-old Muhammad Usman, who was brought by an ambulance to the MSF-supported Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) in Maiduguri after developing symptoms.

"He started vomiting, had diarrhoea and complained of stomach pain," says Hadiza Ali, Muhammad’s mother. "Later, he lost consciousness. We realised it could be cholera.”

Muhammad is one of thousands of people affected since the first patients with suspected cholera were reported on 1 May 2026. Infections have risen rapidly, driven by overcrowded informal settlements, limited access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, and poor waste management. As of 12 July, the Borno state Ministry of Health (MoH) had reported more than 35,500 patients with suspected cholera and 198 deaths in the state.

As of 12 July 2026, MSF had treated over 24,000 patients with suspected cholera since responding to the surge, with over one in four presenting with severe symptoms.

Despite the significant efforts made to curb the transmission, many communities, particularly those living in informal settlements, still lack access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare, allowing transmission to continue. The outbreak has also spread beyond Borno into neighbouring Plateau state, where the MoH has reported 102 patients with suspected cholera as of 12 July 2026.

With health facilities under sustained pressure and new infections continuing to emerge, strengthening access to clean water, sanitation, surveillance and timely treatment is critical. Furthermore, vaccination campaigns must urgently be expanded across affected areas to help slow transmission and prevent further loss of life

A cholera outbreak in Nigeria's Plateau State has infected approximately 441 people and claimed 14 lives across four local government areas, state health authorities said.

Plateau State Commissioner for Health Dr. Nicholas Ba'amlong disclosed the latest figures during a briefing in Jos, noting that health officials have also confirmed 20 positive Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) cases and six laboratory-confirmed infections through culture testing.

According to the commissioner, the outbreak has affected 25 wards and 107 settlements, prompting an extensive public health response involving state and federal authorities.

Ba'amlong said the number of active cases has declined significantly, with only three patients currently receiving treatment in Jos North, describing the trend as evidence that government intervention measures are beginning to contain the outbreak.

"The interventions being implemented are yielding positive results," he said...
