Nigeria: Cholera Outbreak - 194 Infected in Jigawa

Dutse ? No fewer than 194 people were confirmed infected by cholera following the out break of the disease in Hadejia, Jigawa State.

Report from the affected areas revealed that the outbreak of the disease started last week and within a few days, spread all over the city, affecting hundreds of people. No death has been recorded in the epidemic.

Confirming the outbreak of the disease, the Director State Primary Health Care, Dr. Aminu Danmalam said as at yesterday, reports have shown that 117 female and 77 male were infected by the cholera disease in Hadejia.

Kano ? Cholera outbreak has hit Kano as 30 cases have been recorded at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) alone, Kano State Commissioner for Health Hajia A'ishatu Isyaku Kiru said yesterday. Daily Trust gathered that the cases were also recorded in many other hospitals across the state, and according to a source at the Murtala Mohammed General Hospital, Kano Municipal Local Government is the worst hit.

In order to avoid death through cholera, Nigerian communities have been advised to step up their hygiene and avoid drinking unclean water.

The Chief Epidemiologist in the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Henry Akpan told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that although some states recorded outbreaks early this year, fatality rate had been curtailed through prompt interventions.

He said that government had also assisted states which were ravaged by cholera in 2010 with drugs and water treatment chemicals. "So far, I will say that with the cholera situation, we are not having any issues,? he said.

HEALTH workers from the Abia State Ministry of Health have beenndrafted to Ugwueke community in Bende Local Government Area of the state, following the outbreak of cholera, which, as at yesterday, had claimed 15 lives.

While confirming the incident during a telephone conversation with the Nigerian Compass, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Okechukwu Ogar, said that already, over 30 persons ?with serious cases of vomiting? had been evacuated from the community to a nearby hospital.

Nigeria: Cholera Kills 20 in Abia

AT LEAST 20 people are reported to have died from an outbreak of gastro-enteritis (cholera) at Ezeukwu community in Bende local government area of Abia State. However, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Okechukwu Oga, confirmed that only 15 people died and that the situation had been brought under control.

Oga disclosed in a telephone interview with Vanguard that those affected had been moved to where there were better medical facilities, adding that there was no cause for alarm as the situation had been brought under total control.

According to the Commissioner, the cholera outbreak occurred last Sunday in the community.

He pointed out that the casualties were those affected between 3am and 12noon that Sunday before the Ministry of Health became aware and deployed its personnel and medications to control the situation.

Oga disclosed that so far, over 70 cases had been recorded with 15 mortalities, assuring that the government had taken adequate measures to ensure that the decease did not spread to other parts of the community.

Umuahia ? Ezeukwu community in Bende LGA of Abia state has been virtually deserted as residents flee in drones to nearby communities and close relations in the cities following cholera outbreak that hit the area last Monday, May 30.

Daily Champion authoritatively reports that death toll has risen to 30 since the epidemic broke out , claiming two casualties in one family in some instances.

Some of the victims evacuated from the community had been hospitalized at Amachara General Hospital in Umuahia South LGA where doctors are now battling to save their lives as most of the heath Centres in the area are already congested, thus raising panic that more casualties might be recorded as a matter of hours if no tangible control measures were undertaken by government urgently.

An outbreak of cholera has claimed over 30 lives, mostly women and children, in Mubi South and Maiha local government councils of Adamawa State, while another 200 are still hospitalised in critical condition in various medical establishments in the area.

The outbreak of the epidemic with the manifest symptoms of cholera, including coughing, vomiting and fever, is believed to have ravaged at least eight communities in Mubi South and Maiha local government councils in Adamawa State.

Nineteen death cases have been reported in Mubi South local government, while another 17 persons have also been confirmed dead of similar ailment in Maiha local government, resulting in serious tension and general apprehension in the affected communities.

Cholera outbreak in Adamawa

An outbreak of a disease suspected to be cholera has killed over 30 persons in Mubi South and Maiha councils of Adamawa State, while several others numbering to 200 are lying clinically ill in various health centres in the state.

Mostly affected by the dreaded disease that comes with cough, fever, vomiting etc are women and children among communities in the two councils.

It was gathered that 19 deaths had been recorded in Maiha council, while 16 persons had also been confirmed dead in Maiha council.

A source closer to the medical department of Mubi South Local Government Area said efforts were being made to ascertain that the epidemic ravaging the area was cholera...

Meanwhile, no fewer than 10 persons have died of cholera in different parts of Jos, the capital of Plateau State, while scores of others are currently recuperating in different health centres and hospitals in the state.

Nigerian Tribune findings revealed that the cholera outbreak was first noticed in places like Angwan Rukuba, Jenta Mageri and Tudun-Wada last week. It later spread to other parts of the city, including Bassa and Shendam local government areas of the state.

The director of Primary Health Agency in the state Ministry of Health, Dr Elias Pede, who confirmed the cholera outbreak, said it was first noticed early last month, adding that the number of people admitted in hospitals have increased.

Cholera Kills 5 In Gombe

NAFADA (GOMBE STATE) - A cholera outbreak in Nafada and Funakaye local government areas of Gombe State has claimed five lives, an official said.


Dr. Abubakar Joshua, the epidemiologist in- charge of Preventive Health Service in Gombe State Ministry of Health, told newsmen that tests had confirmed the outbreak of the disease.


Joshua said that the ministry received reports of the outbreak of gastro-enteritis from Bajoga town in Funakaye Local Government Area on June 15 and from Nafada town of Nafada Local Government Area on June 23, with a total of 104 recorded cases.



?There are so many causes of gastro-enteritis, depending on the age of the patient, whether child or adult.



``But in this case, when we received a report of gastro-enteritis, we had to collect the stool sample and analyse it to see the causative agent and found that it was cholera.


?Out of the five patients that we met in General Hospital, Nafada, two of them tested positive to the organism that causes cholera.?


Joshua said that three deaths were recorded in Nafada and two in Bajoga

Yola ? One person has died while 30 others have been hospitalized over the recent cholera outbreak in Alarraba village,Verre district of Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Most of the affected persons are women and children. According to the village head of Alarraba, Mr Enock Ya'asoli, the disease broke out last Thursday. He told the state's local radio, ABC Yola, that the matter has since been reported to the local government's health department.

LEADERSHIP findings revealed that the victims were from the interior parts of Ibadan, like Eleta, Gege, Oritamerin, Foko, Oniyanrin and others where hygene was low.

Sources hinted that the outbreak was caused by lack of potable water and the negligent acts of the people who source water from unhygienic sources.

THE people of Osun State now live in fear over the outbreak of cholera that has claimed eight lives in the state.

Nigerian Tribune investigations revealed that the epidemic, which has affected some parts of the state in the past few days, has sent dangerous signals to the people as there are no medical officials that could come to their rescue due to the ongoing strike by medical practitioners in the state.

It was gathered that the epidemic claimed four lives in Ede North, two in Sogbedere village, Ede South Local Government and two in the ancient town of Ede.

Cholera kills 11 in Nasarawa

ELEVEN persons were yesterday killed in an outbreak of cholera in two local government areas of Nasarawa State.

Seven persons were said to have died in Lafia Local Government and four in Karu Local Government, near the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Director of Personnel Management (DPM) in charge of Karu, John Iyakwari, said the victims suffered severe diarrhoea.

The Chief Community Health Officer of the Primary Health Care (PHC) Clinic, Mana, near the Emir?s palace in Lafia, Mrs Aishatu Yahaya said the first case was recorded in June.

She said many reported cases came from Makama and Ciroma wards, and a few others from Gayam ward, all in Lafia.

It was gathered that between June and yesterday, 189 cases had been reported.

?We had the first few cases in June. But it was in July they really started coming in large numbers. Now, we have reported cases of about 186,? Mrs Yahaya said.

She urged the residents to stay away from infected persons, saying some of the cases were those that had contacted the disease from relations that were earlier admitted at the clinic.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Gamaliel Monday, said he did not have the details of the cases.

He promised to talk more on the matter today.

Kano - Health officials say at least 46 people have died from cholera-related symptoms in northern Nigeria over the last month.

Yobe state health chief Fatsuma Talba said on Tuesday that 33 people have died in the northeastern state. Community health officer Aishatu Yahaya says 11 others died in the north-central state of Nasarawa.

Cholera Claims 13 Lives In Sokoto

No fewer than 13 people have died in Gwadabawa Local Government Area of Sokoto State following the outbreak of cholera in five villages in the area, according to the state Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigwandu.

Maigwandu who stated this on Friday while fielding questions from reporters on the outbreak at his office, said the disease had ravaged five villages in the area, namely. Lukuwa, Chimmola, Gidan Kaya, Mammande and Tambagarka where, at the moment, 437 people were affected.

He said although the disease started at Lukuwa but Chimmola village was worse hit by the ailment.
